Former 49ers Are Bringing Real Revenge Energy Into Mexico City

As tensions mount between the San Francisco 49ers and their former players, a social media exchange hints at deeper unresolved issues fueling their upcoming clash.

The 49ers’ Week 8 bye did nothing to quiet the noise around the team. If anything, the chatter only got louder after Jauan Jennings stirred the pot and Jordan Mason jumped right in behind him.

It started with the news that Jennings had personally shut down a trade that would have sent him back to Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Then Jennings took to social media with a message that read: “built for it just like the ancestors were” and plenty of people took that as a shot at the franchise that let him leave.

Mason made the situation even messier by resharing Jennings’ post. That move made it clear the former 49ers in Minnesota are not exactly carrying warm feelings toward Santa Clara.

Their grievances come from different places, but they land in the same spot. Mason arrived in San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in 2022, then spent the 2024 season carrying the load when Christian McCaffrey was dealing with bilateral Achilles tendinitis.

He answered the call, but the 49ers still traded him to Minnesota after the season. Since then, Mason has put together a 758-yard, six-touchdown season in 2025 and already has 147 rushing yards and a score in 2026, even with rotational work.

Jennings’ path was different. He wasn’t dealt away; he reached free agency and signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Vikings.

But his production has been limited behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, with just six catches for 54 yards so far this season. The source of the frustration is obvious: he passed on a chance to return to San Francisco, where a bigger role was available with Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson battling injuries, and instead chose Minnesota.

Now all of that spills into a Week 11 meeting that already has the feel of a heavyweight game. The 49ers and Vikings will meet in Mexico City, and both teams are sitting near the top of the NFC standings. The result could matter for home-field advantage and the No. 1 overall seed in January.

Minnesota’s offense has had its rough patches, but this matchup comes with extra edge now. If Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris overlook Mason’s physical running or Jennings’ third-down value at Estadio Azteca, both former 49ers will have a chance to make the reunion sting.

49ers May Already Have A Bigger WR Problem Than Expected

The 49ers receiver room has already become a talking point, and not just because of how much draft capital the team has poured into the position in recent years. A fresh look from CBS Sports Ryan Wilson adds another layer to the conversation, projecting San Francisco to target Indiana junior Nick Marsh in the first round of the 2027 NFL draft, a sign that the need at wideout could linger well beyond this season.

Marsh, who transferred from Michigan State, is viewed as a big-bodied, physical pass catcher with a knack for winning contested throws, the kind of profile that fits a team looking for more stability on the perimeter. For San Francisco, the bigger concern is the present as much as the future, with injuries already thinning the depth chart and forcing the organization to keep one eye on how quickly the room can be rebuilt. 49ers Deadline Buzz Centers On Two Roster Needs They Still Havent Fixed

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the 49ers are once again being mentioned as a team to watch, and not just because of the usual late-season roster churn. NFL insider Jordan Schultz said San Francisco and Chicago could still be active buyers, with the conversation around available names already starting to narrow toward familiar targets and familiar needs. The backdrop is the same one that has followed the 49ers for weeks: a team with clear ambitions, but still room to strengthen the roster in a couple of key spots.

Jordan Schultz also pointed to ongoing interest around players such as George Pickens and Khalil Mack, while Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh added another layer to the Mack chatter. For San Francisco, the bigger question is whether the front office sees enough value to make a move before the deadline passes, especially with the club still being linked to help at receiver and along the pass rush. 49ers Suddenly Hold A Trade Chip Baltimore Might Desperately Need

The quarterback market can change fast in November, and the Ravens suddenly find themselves in a bind after Lamar Jacksons thumb injury was serious enough to require surgery and likely send him to injured reserve. With Tyler Huntley also hurt, Baltimore is staring at an upcoming game with very limited options under center, which is why the conversation has already turned toward outside help and, specifically, whether the 49ers might be willing to listen on Mac Jones.

Jones has done enough as a starter in 2023 to make him a plausible bridge option for a team in crisis, and San Francisco knows it has a valuable piece on its hands. The catch is that the 49ers have been reluctant to move him, and any deal would have to clear a steep hurdle before Baltimore could even think about making it work. [Read more 🡒]
