Former 49er Could Force A Tough Adjustment From Purdy And Shanahan

Former 49er Talanoa Hufanga's impressive season and deep knowledge of San Francisco's playbook could pose a significant threat in the team's upcoming showdown with the Broncos.

The 49ers are heading into Week 4 with one eye on a familiar face in Denver.

Talanoa Hufanga, now with the Broncos after joining them in 2025, has quickly looked like the kind of player San Francisco does not want dictating the game. For the 49ers, the concern is simple: he knows this offense, and he’s playing well enough right now to turn that knowledge into damage.

The numbers back it up. Hufanga has a 75.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, which ranks 15th, and his 84.3 coverage grade sits fourth in the league. That’s the kind of production that can change a game before the offense even realizes what’s happening.

He flashed exactly that in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams. Hufanga picked off two passes in the fourth quarter to help Denver win, returning one interception 66 yards for a touchdown and sealing the game with the other. He also added a sack, a quarterback hit, five total tackles and three passes defended.

That kind of performance is especially notable for San Francisco because it comes from a player who spent four years with the 49ers and understands how Kyle Shanahan’s offense is built. He knows the looks, the tendencies and the rhythm of the system better than most safeties he’ll face.

George Kittle addressed that matchup with our very own Grant Cohn and made it clear the 49ers are aware of what Hufanga brings. “He’s watching every single game.

He’s watching tendencies. He’s watching guys break down on their routes.

How do you not let him do that? Well, hopefully he gets us wrong a couple times.

“Those instinctual players, right? He’s gonna make plays, and we gotta make sure he doesn’t make all the plays,” Kittle added.

“We have a lot of really good players, so it is what it is. …If we can take advantage of some of that stuff, it should be pretty fun.”

The matchup also lands at a time when Brock Purdy has been highly efficient, completing 72.3% of his passes through three games, the best mark of his career so far. Still, the Broncos’ defense gives him more to deal with than just Hufanga.

Kittle figures to be Hufanga’s biggest assignment, and after returning strongly from his Achilles injury, this is another test for him. It also may push the 49ers to get a little more inventive in how they deploy Kittle.

49ers Escape Denver With A Bigger Concern Heading Into Seattle

The 49ers left Denver with a win, but the bigger storyline may have been what came out of the game physically. San Francisco had already taken a hit in a hard-fought afternoon, and the injury list kept growing as the game wore on, with several players forced to exit before the final whistle.

The most notable concern centers on fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who injured his knee and is preliminarily believed to have a sprain with an intact ACL, pending MRI results. Safety Marques Sigle and cornerback Upton Stout also left with injuries, though none of the early signs point to anything season-ending, leaving the 49ers waiting on more clarity as they turn their attention to Seattle. 49ers Win Still Left Kyle Shanahan With An Uncomfortable Debate

Kyle Shanahans name now sits alone atop a franchise list that once belonged to Bill Walsh, a milestone that would normally define a victory lap for any 49ers coach. Instead, it came in a 24-14 win over the Broncos that felt more like a reminder of how San Francisco is being carried right now, with the defense doing the heavy lifting while Brock Purdy and the offense worked through a flatter afternoon than the team has been used to.

The 49ers still moved the ball well enough to finish with 358 yards and they stayed efficient enough on third down, going 6 of 13 without turning it over. But for a coach who just passed a legend and for an offense that had already set a higher bar earlier in the season, the bigger question coming out of the game was not the record book moment. It was how much Shanahan trusts this version of the offense to find its rhythm again before the schedule starts demanding it. [Read more 🡒]

Dre Greenlaw Had A Personal Message For Sean Payton Sunday

Dre Greenlaw had a little extra edge Sunday in the 49ers matchup with Denver, and it showed in a moment that quickly made the rounds. The linebacker, now back in San Francisco on a one-year contract, was caught on camera telling Broncos coach Sean Payton that Denver made a mistake letting him go after injuries cut short his run there.

For the 49ers, it was another reminder that Greenlaw is not just back, he matters to their defense in a big way. After spending the previous season with the Broncos, he has reestablished himself as an important piece in San Francisco, and the message he delivered Sunday carried the kind of personal sting that tends to follow a player who felt he had something to prove.
