Nick Bosa didn’t need a long breakdown to explain what Dre Greenlaw brings back to the 49ers. He went straight to the part that matters most on defense: attitude.
As San Francisco prepared for its Week 2 home matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Bosa made it clear just how much Greenlaw changes the feel of that unit.
"It's amazing. Dre is my favorite teammate I've ever played with on the field, so to have him back is awesome," Bosa said.
"He wears his emotions on his sleeve, and you can feel the energy and the anger. When you play defense, it's fun to be a part of."
That kind of praise carries more weight after what the two showed in their first game back together. In San Francisco’s 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams overseas in Week 1, Bosa and Greenlaw combined for 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hit.
The fit is obvious. Bosa works the edge and squeezes the pocket, while Greenlaw attacks downhill and finishes plays with the kind of edge that makes the whole defense look faster and meaner. Against a division opponent, the 49ers didn’t need much time to show the pairing still works.
Greenlaw’s return has been a long time coming, and the road back was anything but smooth. He suffered an Achilles injury in Super Bowl LVIII, worked his way back, then signed a three-season, $35 million deal with the Denver Broncos in 2025.
That move didn’t last. Injuries kept getting in the way during his lone season in Denver, and the Broncos cut him in March. Greenlaw later spoke about his frustration and pointed to the physical setbacks that derailed his year.
The 49ers moved quickly after that. Within days of his release, they brought him back on a one-year, $7.5 million contract. The deal says plenty about how much they wanted him back, and it gives San Francisco a lower-risk bet on a player with a recent injury history.
It also gives Greenlaw a chance to re-establish himself in the defense where he built his reputation after entering the league in 2019 alongside Bosa. If he stays healthy and productive, the short-term arrangement could open the door to something bigger down the line.
For now, he’s back in the mix with Fred Warner and Deommodore Lenoir, giving the 49ers another emotional jolt on a defense that already had one in Bosa. Miami will get the first look at that version on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, where San Francisco is chasing its second win.
