DeForest Buckner’s path back to San Francisco came down to one place and one place only.
The defensive tackle, acquired by the 49ers ahead of the trade deadline, said he made it clear where he wanted to land once the deal started to take shape. Reports said the Chicago Bears were willing to send multiple picks for him, but Buckner had his sights set on the team that drafted him.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since the trade, Buckner said, "When everything kind of unfolded and everything, I stated that I wanted to come here. I didn't want to go anywhere else.
"Obviously, the familiarity with being here, being drafted here, all the guys that are still here when I was here, watching them. I've been keeping up with the games over the years and just watching the standard of play that they play at, and the winning football that they play at. This is where I wanted to be.
"I'm really just focused on the new opportunity I have here and just taking it one week at a time," Buckner added. "Like, literally, that's all I've been thinking about. It's been a whirlwind and everything, but my main goal is just continuing each and every week to get better.
"It's just crazy how life work. Coming back full circle, being here, this new opportunity. You all don't understand how excited I am to be back in the red and gold, where it all started, and with a bunch of guys that I have love for, and they have love for me, and I just want to continue to show them what I can do and what I can bring to the table."
The return comes with no apparent bad blood after six years away, and that matters for a 49ers team that needed help up front. San Francisco has been looking to sharpen its pass rush, and Buckner arrives with that need front and center.
Even without taking a snap for the 49ers yet, Buckner is already the team’s sack leader with four this season. He comes back at a clean moment, too, with the bye week just ending and a full week available to settle back in before he plays again.
Buckner isn’t the only familiar face to find his way back to San Francisco. Dre Greenlaw returned in free agency, Deebo Samuel came back during training camp, and Buckner now joins that group in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
That pattern says plenty about where the 49ers are headed. San Francisco has shown a clear willingness to bring back players from its past, and with Buckner in the fold, the move looks like a smart one at the right time.

49ers May Already Have A Bigger WR Problem Than Expected
The 49ers have spent real draft capital on wide receivers in recent years, but the position is already looking like a longer-term issue than they probably hoped. CBS Sports Ryan Wilson has San Francisco eyeing Indiana junior Nick Marsh in his 2027 NFL mock draft, a nod to how much the team continues to value size and physicality on the outside, especially from a player who can win contested catches.
Marshs profile fits the kind of receiver room the 49ers have tried to build, but the need is being sharpened by the present-day reality of the roster. Ricky Pearsall is out for the year with a knee injury, and DeZhaun Stribling is expected back only in December after ankle surgery, leaving the team to navigate a position that may need help now and down the road. 49ers Suddenly Hold A Trade Chip Baltimore Might Desperately Need
The quarterback picture in Baltimore has gone from shaky to urgent, and it has suddenly put a familiar name on the radar in San Francisco. With Lamar Jackson dealing with a thumb injury that requires surgery and likely sends him to injured reserve, and Tyler Huntley also banged up, the Ravens are staring at a thin depth chart at the worst possible time as they try to keep their season from veering off course.
That is why the 49ers have become part of the conversation, with Mac Jones emerging as a possible answer if Baltimore decides it needs a veteran bridge option. Jones has handled himself well in a starting role, which only adds to his appeal, but San Francisco has been reluctant to move him and would not be expected to make it easy for a desperate team to pry him loose. 49ers Deadline Buzz Centers On Two Roster Needs They Still Havent Fixed
With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the 49ers keep showing up in the leaguewide conversation as a team worth watching. Insider Jordan Schultz said San Francisco and the Bears could still be active, and the names floating around the market only add to the sense that the final hours could get interesting for a club trying to sharpen its roster for the stretch run.
The 49ers interest appears to be centered on two obvious areas, even as the market keeps shifting around them. Khalil Mack remains part of the chatter, and George Pickens is another player drawing attention, which fits the kind of upgrade San Francisco has been linked to as it weighs whether to make another move before the deadline passes.
