Commanders Linked to 49ers Star in Major Contract Move

The Washington Commanders are reportedly eyeing a strategic move to boost their receiving lineup with a potential $67 million deal for 49ers free agent Jauan Jennings.

The Washington Commanders are in clear need of bolstering their wide receiver corps, yet they've been quiet in free agency. With Deebo Samuel approaching free agency and limited depth beyond Terry McLaurin, the urgency is palpable.

So far, the Commanders have only added tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo to support quarterback Jayden Daniels. There's buzz around Brandon Aiyuk potentially joining Washington, but as ESPN's Adam Schefter notes, the San Francisco 49ers aren't rushing to release him. Even if Aiyuk does come on board, there's uncertainty given his lack of play since 2024.

In this context, FOX Sports' Greg Auman predicts that Washington might turn to veteran wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who was Aiyuk's teammate in San Francisco. Jennings is projected by Spotrac to command a three-year, $67 million contract in free agency.

Jennings, part of the 49ers' underwhelming receiver group last season, caught 15 touchdowns over the past two years but managed just 643 yards on 90 targets this season, ranking 55th in yards per target. With a potential price tag over $20 million annually, he may be out of San Francisco's budget.

The Commanders could be a logical landing spot for Jennings, providing a solid option to line up with McLaurin. Reports suggest the 49ers are likely to lose Jennings, and after a modest start to his NFL career, he made a splash in 2024 with 975 yards and six touchdowns. Despite a dip to 643 yards in 2025, Jennings played through injuries and still managed nine touchdowns.

While Jennings might not be the blockbuster signing Commanders fans are hoping for, he'd serve as a reliable No. 2 target for Daniels. Although Spotrac's contract projection seems high, a more realistic figure might be around $15 million, a price point at which Washington could make a move for the former Tennessee standout.
