Commanders Fans Had Plenty To Say About One Pregame Performance

Pat Monahan's attempt at the National Anthem before the 49ers-Commanders game hits a sour note with NFL fans.

Train frontman Pat Monahan took the field at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Monday night and, alongside his son Rock, handled the national anthem before the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers kicked off. It did not go over well with plenty of fans watching.

The reaction online came fast and loud, with social media users piling on the performance after Monahan and Rock finished “The Star-Spangled Banner.” One fan wrote, “National Anthem performed for Washington Commanders v 49ers game just now was actually worse than the mariachi band and Rosanne Barr combined,” while another said, “If you’re going to use musical accompaniment for the National Anthem at least play the base chords instead of the vocal melody.”

Others were even harsher. “MNF National Anthem SUCKED.

That Train was a disgrace and a DISASTER. WTF- Corey Feldman would have done a better job,” one post read.

Another fan said, “Now we know what a derailed Train sounds like as it sings the National Anthem. Holy s**t that was bad,” and a different comment summed it up this way: “Damn…that performance by Train of the national anthem on Monday Night Football absolutely SUCKED.”

The anthem was the one part of the night fans only had to endure once. After that, attention turned to Week 6 on Monday Night Football, where San Francisco came in trying to keep its perfect start alive after winning its first five games. Washington arrived at 1-3-1 after a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants in Week 5.

49ers Are Undefeated But This Start Is Not Making Them Comfortable

The 49ers are rolling through the early part of the season with six straight wins, a perfect record and the top spot in the NFC, but the mood around the building has stayed measured. San Francisco is also 3-0 in the NFC West after taking care of the Seahawks and Rams, the kind of division start that usually makes a team feel comfortably ahead of the pack.

Kyle Shanahan, Trent Williams and Fred Warner have all spoken about the way the team is approaching the run, and the tone has been more about focus than celebration. Even with the results piling up, there is a clear sense that this start has not fully eased the concerns inside the locker room, especially with the long season still ahead and the margins in recent games still feeling tighter than the record suggests. Ex-49ers Depth Piece Suddenly Became A Much Bigger NFL Story

Jordan Elliotts stint with the Titans ended almost as quickly as it began, and the reason has turned him into a much bigger league-wide story than the former 49ers depth piece usually draws. Tennessee released him after an incident at the team facility involving a firearm in his car, and the Titans made clear the move came after a violation of NFL rules on possessing a gun on team property.

The situation only became more notable when Robert Saleh addressed it, calling it a lapse in judgment while still voicing support for Elliott. Saleh also nudged other teams to take a hard look at him, which leaves the attention less on the dismissal itself and more on whether another locker room is willing to give him a second chance after such a messy episode. 49ers Fans Want A Receiver Trade But One Problem Keeps Looming

The receiver chatter around the 49ers has only grown as injuries have thinned out the room and left the team leaning on Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing and Brandin Cooks in the short term. With Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans both dealing with issues, it is easy to see why fans have been pushing for a trade, especially with the offense built around dependable playmakers on the perimeter.

Still, the front office is staring at a tricky market. The most realistic options are not all that exciting, and the kind of receiver who could truly move the needle is bound to come with a steep price because other teams are eyeing him too. Add in the possibility that help is already on the way soon, and the urgency to make a splash may not match the reality of what is actually available. [Read more 🡒]
