Christian McCaffrey Suddenly Looms Over 49ers Biggest Falcons Question

Christian McCaffrey's versatile skills may be the San Francisco 49ers' key to overcoming the offensive challenges posed by Mike Evans' absence.

Christian McCaffrey may end up carrying a bigger share of San Francisco’s offense on Sunday, but not necessarily in the most obvious way.

With wide receiver Mike Evans officially out against the Atlanta Falcons after leaving Monday night’s game against the Washington Commanders late in the first half, the 49ers are heading into Week 7 with another hole to patch. General manager John Lynch left a little room for doubt on Thursday, but Friday brought the expected update: Evans will not play. With a bye week coming in Weekl 8, sitting him is the sensible call.

That doesn’t make the challenge any easier. Atlanta sits at 2-4, but the Falcons are hardly a team San Francisco can cruise past, especially with Bijan Robinson looming as a dangerous weapon. The 49ers also know they need a cleaner answer on offense than the one they found after Evans exited Monday night, when they struggled to score in the second half against Washington.

McCaffrey is the name most likely to absorb some of that pressure, though his role may tilt more toward the passing game than extra handoffs. Reporter Vic Tafur of The Athletic relayed McCaffrey’s response when asked about lining up in the slot again this week: “Christian McCaffrey was asked if he might line up more at the slot again this week, with all the WR injuries: ‘I don't know.

I usually don't get the gameplan until Sunday morning. We'll see.’

And then he couldn't help a small smile as he looked away.”

That kind of usage would give San Francisco a practical way to cover for Evans’ absence. McCaffrey’s value has always been the full package - a back who can take 15 carries and still catch five or six passes - and a slot role would lean into that versatility.

The 49ers have been more mindful with his workload this season, and Kyle Shanahan has managed his touches well. But with so many offensive pieces sidelined, Sunday could be a chance to push him a little harder.

San Francisco’s likely top three receivers are Brandin Cooks, Christian Kirk, and Jordan Watkins, which puts even more weight on George Kittle and McCaffrey to keep the offense moving. If McCaffrey does spend more time as a de facto slot receiver, it would give the 49ers another way to make up for Evans’ absence while trying to stay undefeated this season.

49ers May Already Have A Problem With Raheem Morris

Raheem Morris arrived in San Francisco as the answer to a major defensive change, stepping in as defensive coordinator after Robert Salehs departure. For Kyle Shanahan, the hire was about stability as much as scheme, and Morris has already fit the profile of a coach who can help keep the 49ers defense steady while the rest of the staff and roster continue to evolve.

The long-term question is whether that arrangement lasts. Shanahan would like Morris to stay in place, and Morris has already acknowledged how rare head-coaching openings can be while sounding content in his current role, but that kind of success tends to travel quickly in the NFL. For now, it is only a possibility hanging over the partnership, yet it is the sort of future issue San Francisco may have to think about sooner than it would like. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Great Takes A Public Shot At Mike Evans' Game

Terrell Owens used his podcast to weigh in on Mike Evans game, and the Hall of Fame receiver did not frame the Buccaneers star as a burner who wins purely on athleticism. Owens made clear he respects what Evans has accomplished, pointing to a career built on production and consistency, including his run of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons.

What Owens and Todd Gurley were getting at was the way Evans has carved out his success in the league, with route nuance and the kind of quarterback support that keeps a receiver productive year after year. It was a familiar kind of ex-player debate, part praise and part critique, and one that put a spotlight on how Evans greatness is viewed by peers who understand the margins at that position. 49ers Suddenly Face A Christian McCaffrey Concern They Can't Ignore

Christian McCaffreys availability briefly turned into the biggest storyline of the afternoon against Atlanta, and not because of anything he did with the ball in his hands. The 49ers running back sustained a thigh injury during the game and was questionable to return after leaving for medical evaluation, a familiar kind of midgame worry for a team that leans heavily on his all-purpose impact.

Before he exited, McCaffrey was already doing his usual damage, helping the offense both on the ground and through the air. San Francisco had to adjust in the meantime, and Kaelon Black helped steady things with a 30-yard touchdown run while McCaffrey was out, but the bigger concern for the 49ers is whether their most versatile weapon can stay available long enough to keep the offense on schedule.
