Christian McCaffrey picked up more than a haircut during the 49ers’ week in Melbourne.
San Francisco spent nearly a week in Australia preparing for its historic season opener against the Rams, and McCaffrey used some downtime for a routine stop at the barber. What came out of that visit turned into one of the funniest moments of the trip, and he relayed it during his postgame press conference while sitting next to George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, both of whom were cracking up as he told the story.
“I was getting a haircut a few days ago and one of the barbers looks at me and says, ‘Looks cracker,’” McCaffrey recalled, per the Daily Mail.
McCaffrey said he had no clue what the barber meant at first. Back home, he’d only heard the word used another way, so the comment caught him off guard.
“I didn’t know what it meant, I guess that means it looks good. But that was funny,” McCaffrey said.
The barber said it again, and McCaffrey decided to lean into it instead of staying confused.
“I said, ‘Dude, I hear that every Sunday.’ That was good, we had a good moment. I enjoy all the slang.”
In Australian English, “cracker” is used to mean something excellent, closer to “great” or “awesome.” That’s a very different meaning from the one McCaffrey would recognize in the United States, which explains the brief pause before everything clicked.
McCaffrey also had good things to say about another part of Australian life during the week: the coffee. Earlier in the trip, he joked that nobody had really hyped it up enough before the team arrived.
On the field, he did his part in San Francisco’s 27-7 win over the Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, finishing with 68 rushing yards on 10 carries and five catches for 20 yards. Rookie running back Kaelon Black actually out-carried him, which fit the workload split Kyle Shanahan had signaled before the game.
Now the 49ers are headed back to the United States with extra rest before hosting Miami in Week 2. McCaffrey, meanwhile, sounds like he’s leaving Australia with a new favorite word.
