Christian McCaffrey just capped off one of the most remarkable comeback campaigns we’ve seen in recent NFL memory - and the Pro Football Writers of America made it official, naming the 49ers star the 2025 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
After missing 13 games in 2024, there were questions about how much McCaffrey could realistically contribute this season. He didn’t just answer them - he blew them out of the water.
Not only did he stay healthy for the full 17-game slate, but he also led all running backs in receiving yards and finished second in the league in total yards from scrimmage. That’s not just a bounce-back - that’s a full-on resurgence.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t hold back when praising his All-Pro back, calling McCaffrey’s season one of the most impressive he’s ever witnessed from an individual player. And coming from a coach who’s been around elite talent for years, that’s saying something.
“Just in terms of what a warrior and man he is week in, week out,” Shanahan said. “Christian finds a way every week.
He commits himself 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to get his body right to go out there and compete. I’ve never been around anything like that.”
That level of dedication showed up on the field. McCaffrey didn’t just suit up - he dominated.
Week after week, he was the engine of the 49ers offense, delivering explosive plays as both a runner and a receiver. His ability to stay on the field and maintain that level of performance, especially without a bye until December, speaks volumes about his preparation, toughness, and football IQ.
And then there’s the history he made: McCaffrey became the first player in NFL history to notch at least five rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns in the same season. That kind of dual-threat production is rare air, even in today’s offensively geared league.
With this honor, McCaffrey joins 49ers greats Bryant Young (1999) and Garrison Hearst (2001) as the only players in franchise history to earn the PFWA’s Comeback Player of the Year award. It’s a fitting recognition for a player who not only returned to form but redefined what a comeback season can look like.
For McCaffrey, this year wasn’t just about proving he could stay healthy - it was about proving he’s still one of the most dynamic, complete backs in the NFL. Mission accomplished.
