The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a bit of a bind as they look to bolster their pass rush this offseason. With only 20 sacks last year, the sudden retirement of defensive end Bryce Huff adds another layer of complexity to their defensive strategy. Sure, having Nick Bosa back from his ACL injury is a big win, but the Niners need more than just Bosa to ramp up their edge-rushing game.
On a brighter note, the 49ers have been busy shoring up their linebacker unit. They've brought back Dre Greenlaw after his stint with the Broncos and secured Luke Gifford on a two-year deal. These moves, however, don't bode well for second-year linebacker Nick Martin, who struggled to make an impact as a rookie despite being a third-round pick.
But here's where things get interesting for Martin. The absence of Huff might actually open doors for him. Martin's rookie season didn't give us much to talk about, and climbing the depth chart won't be easy with players like Greenlaw, Gifford, Dee Winters, and Tatum Bethune standing in his way behind All-Pro Fred Warner.
Yet, with Huff out, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris might have a chance to tap into Martin's potential. Martin's strength lies in his pass-rushing ability, something he showcased back in 2023 with six sacks and 16 tackles for loss before injuries sidelined him. Using Martin in an odd-man front could play to his strengths and give the Niners a much-needed boost in their pass rush.
Without Huff, Morris may have to get creative, and Martin's pass-rushing prowess might be just what the team needs to turn things around. This opportunity could be the key to reviving Martin's career and giving the 49ers' defense the edge it desperately needs.
