Brock Purdy's Hot Start Is About To Face A Different Test

As Brock Purdy's MVP buzz builds, experts debate whether his impressive stats are a sign of true elite play or simply a result of facing weaker opponents.

After three weeks, Brock Purdy has already forced his way into the MVP discussion.

That talk picked up fast when Dan Orlovsky went on the Pat McAfee Show and said he believes no quarterback is playing better right now than the San Francisco 49ers starter.

“No quarterback in football is playing as well as Brock,” said Orlovsky. “The offense gets to excel with the way that he is playing. He also has so many off-script plays that get overlooked so often.“

McAfee made the case too, saying Purdy could be headed for his first MVP push if this pace holds.

“This might be Purdy's year of winning it,” said McAfee on the MVP conversation. “All he has done is continue to dissect and beat the hell out of defenses. Brock Purdy is playing on another level right now.”

Purdy’s numbers back up the buzz. He is second among qualified quarterbacks in completion rate behind Geno Smith.

He ranks eighth in yards, but he is second in yards per attempt, trailing only Lamar Jackson. The catch is that San Francisco has been scoring so quickly that Purdy simply has not needed to pile up huge volume.

What does stand out is the efficiency. Purdy leads the NFL with nine touchdown passes and has thrown only one interception, giving him the best TD-to-INT ratio in the league.

There’s also a fair counterargument, and it starts with the early schedule. The Rams are a good defense and should have strong outings this season, but their trip to Australia has been under the microscope, with Sean McVay himself saying they were not smart.

After that, Los Angeles matched up with the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, two teams that rank in the bottom five in efficiency. Part of that comes from playing the 49ers, but both defenses have had issues outside those games too.

The Dolphins gave up 24 to the Chiefs at home and allowed Kirk Cousins and the Las Vegas Raiders to score 27. The Cardinals were helped by an injury to Ladd McConkey in Week 1 and then surrendered 31 to Drew Lock and the Seattle Seahawks the following week.

So yes, Purdy has been sharp, and the film supports it. But he has also faced opponents he should have been able to put away. Week 4 should tell us a lot more, because that’s when he runs into a talented Denver Broncos defense.

Fred Warner May Have Created A Rivalry Problem For The 49ers

Fred Warners postgame comments after the 49ers close win over the Arizona Cardinals added a little edge to a division race that already has plenty of it. The veteran linebacker said the earlier meetings were not true NFL ball because starters were sitting out in the fourth quarter, a remark that was really about the competitive feel of those games rather than a direct shot at anyone in particular.

Even so, the line has a way of landing differently when a division rival is involved, especially with the Los Angeles Rams dealing with their own adversity this season. If the Rams take it as a slight, Warner may have given them a little extra fuel, and the 49ers will find out soon enough whether a passing comment turns into something bigger on the field. Tyreek Hill Is Back On The Radar For Banged-Up 49ers

Tyreek Hill is back in the conversation after posting on social media that he is close to returning to work, a notable update for a receiver still working back from a severe knee injury. Around the league, that kind of message tends to spark instant speculation, and it lands especially hard for the 49ers, who have been hit by a string of wide receiver injuries this season.

San Franciscos need at the position has only grown with the recent rib injury to Mike Evans adding to the teams already banged-up receiving group. Hill has naturally become a name to watch, but for now the interest remains just that, with no official contact or deal reported as the 49ers and other teams monitor his recovery. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Pass Rush Finally Has Help But One Question Still Looms

San Franciscos pass rush is finally getting some much-needed reinforcement, with rookie Mykel Williams expected back at practice this week as he continues to work his way back from an ACL injury. The 49ers also could have rookie third-round pick Height available again after he missed Week 3 with a broken hand, and the team is even considering letting him play with a cast, though that would likely come with some limitations.

Matthew Judons arrival on the practice squad adds another layer of intrigue, giving the 49ers a proven veteran option they can potentially elevate soon if they want more help up front. It gives the defense a deeper bench at a time when the edge rush has been stretched thin, but the bigger question is how quickly all of these pieces can be folded back in and whether San Francisco will have enough from them to make a real difference right away.
