Through two games, Brock Purdy has been the San Francisco 49ers’ sharpest player by a wide margin.
He’s been efficient on just about every snap, and outside of one bad interception in Week 1, he has looked locked in. Purdy has already piled up six touchdowns and 551 total yards, production that only tells part of the story.
The bigger takeaway is how clean and controlled his play has looked, especially compared with the start of last season. This is the best he’s looked at the beginning of a year since 2023, when he finished as an MVP finalist.
That’s why the question after the 49ers’ win over the Miami Dolphins was less about what Purdy did and more about why it looks so different now. Kyle Shanahan pointed to a quarterback who has found the right balance between aggression and restraint.
“I thought he had his best training camp, just in terms of being aggressive with things, but not stupid. Still making the right efficient decision, but when there's a chance of things being aggressive, and I've seen that here these last two weeks.
I think the more he plays, just with experience, the easier defenses come to recognize and things like that," Shanahan said. "I just think you gradually become a vet and used to everything that you've seen.
You're used to every situation you've been in."
That matches what’s showing up on the field. Purdy appears to have shed the habit of chasing the home run on every dropback.
In the last two years, that tendency brought plenty of pressure and made his job harder than it needed to be. Now he’s playing with more patience, taking what the defense gives him, and looking for the right throw instead of forcing the spectacular one.
Purdy said as much himself.
"Playing quarterback is dishing it out and staying ahead of the chains and taking completions when the defense is giving it to you," said Purdy. "So, I feel like I've had to learn sort of the hard way throughout my career so far on some experiences and some scars, but I feel like you’ve got to learn and make improvements and make change.
That's what I did this offseason, I feel like. So, hopefully I can keep that up.”
That approach is exactly what the 49ers need. Purdy is keeping drives alive, stacking points and protecting the ball instead of putting it in danger.
It’s still early, and a couple more games will go a long way toward proving this is a real step forward. But for now, he’s made the leap in the first two, and that gives San Francisco plenty to work with.

Brock Purdy Led A 49ers Rout But The Grades Get More Interesting
Brock Purdys sharp afternoon in the 49ers 35-13 win over the Dolphins carried over into the numbers game, too. Pro Football Focus handed him the highest overall offensive grade in the NFL for Week 2 after he completed 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards, threw two touchdowns and added a rushing score, all while San Franciscos line kept him clean and did not allow a sack.
The grading also painted a fuller picture of how the offense functioned around him, with George Kittle standing out in the receiving evaluation and Kyle Juszczyk earning his usual value in the mix. Not every name landed as high, though, and the split in the grades makes the review of this rout a little more interesting for a 49ers team that looked dominant on the scoreboard but still gave PFF plenty to sort through.
