Brock Purdy Gets Real About A Brandon Aiyuk Reunion

As the NFL trade deadline looms, Brock Purdy weighs in on a potential reunion with Brandon Aiyuk, sharing his personal perspective amidst the uncertain dynamics of the 49ers.

Brock Purdy isn’t carrying any bitterness into a possible Brandon Aiyuk reunion.

With Aiyuk working toward reinstatement ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback made it clear that if the wideout does show back up in the building on Friday, the welcome will be warm.

“Nah, I haven't,” Purdy said in comments shared by OurSF49ers when asked if he had thought about what he might say to Aiyuk.

“Like I’ve said before, I love what we did together when we played together and everything, and obviously haven’t spoken to him in a long time or anything.”

Aiyuk is expected to report to San Francisco’s facility after filing paperwork to return from the reserve/left squad list. Even so, his long-term future with the team is still unsettled after a drawn-out absence.

Purdy said he doesn’t have a clear read on the full situation, and he wasn’t pretending otherwise.

“Not really sure what the whole situation is and stuff, that's out of my control, but if I saw him, it would be nothing but love from me.”

That connection between the two was a real one during San Francisco’s playoff pushes. Aiyuk posted a career-best 1,342 receiving yards in 2023 and helped the 49ers get to Super Bowl 58.

Kyle Shanahan has already said he had mentally moved on from Aiyuk, though general manager John Lynch has not fully closed the door on a reunion.

For Purdy, though, this is less about roster mechanics and more about a teammate he still respects. Whatever happens next, the feeling on his side hasn’t changed.

Brandon Aiyuk Situation Just Got Much Messier For The 49ers

Brandon Aiyuks next steps with the 49ers have become a lot more complicated as the sides sort through a contract issue that goes beyond the usual trade or release conversation. His agent said there are plans to meet with the team, but the situation now has the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association involved as the two sides work through how his contract and roster status should be handled.

What makes this especially messy is that the process could still end in agreement or move to arbitration, leaving Aiyuks future in San Francisco unresolved for now. For a 49ers team that has already had to navigate plenty of offseason noise, the uncertainty around one of its most prominent players adds another layer to a situation that is clearly not close to being settled. 49ers Face Two Raiders Threats That Could Ruin A Post-Bye Reset

The 49ers come out of the bye with a clear defensive emphasis, and the timing is right after a stretch in which San Francisco has been looking for more consistency on that side of the ball. Adding DeForest Buckner would fit that broader push for sturdier play up front, especially with the next opponent offering a mix of problems that can make a reset feel a lot less comfortable than it sounds.

Las Vegas has been shaky enough defensively to invite confidence, but the Raiders also have a knack for creating turnovers, which can flip a game fast if San Francisco gets loose with the ball. On the other side, the passing game has found enough rhythm to matter, with Kirk Cousins and Brock Bowers giving the Raiders a couple of routes to stress a defense that wants the bye week to show up on the field immediately. 49ers Face A Real Kirk Cousins Problem Morris Knows Well

Kirk Cousins has been one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the league this season, and 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris knows exactly why that matters. Morris praised Cousins for the way he has progressed and for how well he operates an offense, a view shaped by their time together in Atlanta, where Morris saw up close how the veteran prepares and brings energy to the huddle.

Now Morris has to turn that familiarity into a plan, because San Francisco is lining up for a meeting with the Raiders and the quarterback challenge is front and center. The respect is real, but so is the job in front of the 49ers, who will need Morris to sort through what he already knows about Cousins and find the answer on game day. [Read more 🡒]
