The New England Patriots may have a receiver issue after Week 1, but Brandon Aiyuk is not the answer.
That’s the takeaway from Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, who floated the Patriots as a possible landing spot for the disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wideout in a trade. On paper, it looks like a fit based on need. In reality, it looks like trouble.
New England lost its Week 1 matchup to the Seattle Seahawks, and it also saw A.J. Brown go down with an injury that will likely keep him out for a while.
He’ll miss at least the next four weeks, and maybe more. With Kayshon Boutte having been traded to the Houston Texans, the Patriots’ receiver group of Romeo Doubs, Demario Douglas, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams suddenly looks thin.
That’s the opening Knox pointed to.
"Although Aiyuk hasn't played since suffering a significant knee injury in 2024, he is still only 28 and surpassed 1,300 receiving yards when he was last healthy in 2023," Knox writes. "... Potential suitors: Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots."
But the idea falls apart fast. Aiyuk has not played since that knee injury in 2024, and the source material makes clear that he has become an off-field problem for the 49ers as well. Even with New England looking for help, this is not the kind of move that should be on its radar.
The Patriots do need depth, but they are not so short-handed that they should chase a player who would bring more problems than production. Brown is not expected to miss the full season, and the current group is still considered serviceable enough to move forward.
Even if San Francisco were to include a draft pick to make the deal more appealing, that still would not change the basic issue: Aiyuk does not make New England better.
If the Patriots are going to explore the market, the source points to other names that would at least make more sense, such as Hollywood Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles or Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Arizona Cardinals.
Aiyuk, though, should be nowhere near the Patriots’ plans. In the middle of the season, adding him in any form would be a bad idea.
