Brandon Aiyuk’s push to get out of San Francisco has turned into a mess of his own making, and the 49ers are the ones sitting in control.
What started as a stream of cryptic Instagram posts has become a very public campaign aimed at forcing the team to release him. Aiyuk has been airing complaints online, saying he has not gotten a dime from the team in 17 months, dating back to the end of the 2024 season in February 2025, and saying he is being “held captive.”
He also posted a video of himself running on his surgically repaired knee and tried to explain why he had not been around the team’s rehab process.
“No, I didn’t miss rehab; I just didn’t rehab with y’all.”
That line only strengthened the 49ers’ case. The team voided his 2026 money in July 2025 after he defaulted on his contract by ghosting the medical staff and skipping team-directed rehabilitation.
Aiyuk’s effort to steer himself toward Washington took another hit over the weekend. For months, he had pointed to the Commanders as his preferred landing spot so he could reunite with former college teammate Jayden Daniels. But during a July 3 World Cup match, a viral clip showed a 49ers fan yelling an expletive about Aiyuk directly at Daniels, who laughed at the moment.
Aiyuk did not let it go. He responded with a video aimed at Daniels and his mother’s public role in his life.
"I’m a grown man, boy," Aiyuk barked on camera. "You gonna have to stop running behind yo mama and I might believe what you talking about."
Daniels then unfollowed him, leaving Aiyuk even more isolated as his market stays open.
The reaction around the league has not been kind. Former 49ers and Washington General Manager Scot McCloughan said on The Kevin Sheehan Show that he had already raised concerns about Aiyuk’s makeup back in 2020.
"What he's done to the 49ers is embarrassing. Embarrassing.
What you're getting in your building is going to be the same thing... If you don't have a locker room that can control that, he'll eat you up.
It's all about him, not about anybody else."
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said Kyle Shanahan is not in a hurry here. The 49ers have the leverage, and they do not have to do anything until August training camp.
Aiyuk set out to force his way out. Instead, he has burned through his options and left himself stranded.
