Brandon Aiyuk took to Instagram early Saturday morning and gave his side of the story, saying the 49ers told him they were taking “30 mil” out of his contract and that the NFLPA asked whether he wanted to appeal.
“They was like, 'BA we're taking 30 mil out of your contract,' Aiyuk wrote on Instagram. "I was like, 'okay.'
NFLPA was like, 'do you want to appeal it and try to get it back??' I was like, 'nah I'm just gone go to DC.'
They was like, 'okay, we're gonna start a smear campaign to try and tarnish your NIL (name, image and likeness).' I was like, 'okay, that's gone make me sad but I'm still going to DC.'

The post came with training camp a week away, and the situation has now shifted from frustration to a more direct explanation from Aiyuk himself. He framed the dispute as one in which the NFLPA was not on his side and suggested the 49ers were trying to damage his reputation.
The source of the conflict, according to Aiyuk’s version, also includes the handling of his knee rehab. The 49ers have implied that he did not rehab seriously from the injury and was never ready to play last season.
Aiyuk’s response is that he did rehab, just not with the team, and that he reached the athletic markers needed to be cleared. He also said the team has the receipts to prove it.
There’s also the matter of representation. The source argues Aiyuk should have moved on from his agent, Ryan Williams, earlier, noting that Williams is also John Lynch’s agent.
That raises the possibility of a conflict of interest, since Williams helped Aiyuk get paid and then may have also helped Lynch get out of Aiyuk’s deal. The NFLPA, the source says, needs to investigate that.
As for why the 49ers have not released Aiyuk, the source says it’s because they want to punish him for walking away from the team after the trade deadline last season and for trying to force his release so he can sign wherever he wants. Former Titans general manager Ran Carthon, who was in the 49ers’ front office from 2017 to 2022, has also entered the conversation. Carthon recently spoke on the radio about Aiyuk, said he knows him personally, and urged people to show him grace. He described Aiyuk as acting out of character and suggested there is likely context behind the behavior.
The source says Carthon may have reached out to NFL front offices on Aiyuk’s behalf to counter what it calls a “smear campaign” and help protect his career. It also notes that Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters, who was with the 49ers from 2017 to 2023, may already know the background of the situation.
