Brandon Aiyuk’s name has started popping up in Dallas, and for Cowboys fans, it’s easy to see why the idea has caught fire. The possibility of pairing him with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens has turned into one of those fantasy scenarios that feels loud enough to become real. But once you move past the excitement, the road to making it happen gets messy fast.
The Polymarket App currently gives Aiyuk a 21% chance of ending up with the Cowboys, and that number has only added fuel to the speculation. A post from Dov Kleiman on July 11, 2026, framed Dallas as one of the favorites to sign the 49ers wideout and pointed to the possibility of a CeeDee Lamb, Pickens and Aiyuk trio.
On paper, that kind of receiver room would be outrageous. In practice, it runs straight into the NFL’s financial reality.
Money is the first wall. Lamb already has a massive contract, Pickens is expected to want a major raise soon, and Aiyuk is sitting on a four-year, $120 million deal he signed in 2024. Trying to squeeze three expensive stars into the same roster under the salary cap is a brutal puzzle, especially for a team that still has plenty of other top players to pay.
Then there’s the health question, and it’s a big one. Aiyuk has not played since October 2024 after tearing his ACL, MCL and meniscus.
That alone makes any team think twice. The situation around him in San Francisco has only gotten uglier from there.
The 49ers voided $27 million of his guaranteed money after he missed team rehab, and general manager John Lynch said the player has taken his last snap for the team. Aiyuk also fired his agent, which only makes contract talks more complicated.
Off the field, he brings more baggage. The source says he has been posting videos criticizing his team and former friends, and that behavior has NFL teams concerned. For Dallas, that kind of drama would be another factor to weigh in a locker room that would already be trying to absorb a major addition.
So while the idea of Lamb, Pickens and Aiyuk together is the kind of thing fans can’t help but dream about, the cap math, the injury history and the off-field issues all point in the same direction: this one looks unlikely. If the Cowboys pass, they could turn to a cheaper option such as rookie Ryan Flournoy, who would then get a bigger chance to prove himself without costing the team millions.

49ers Could Be Headed For A Brutal Roster Cleanup After This Season
The 49ers are staring at the kind of cap crunch that tends to force hard choices, and the pressure is expected to hit hard after the 2026 season. With the roster already built around expensive core pieces, the front office could be staring at a cleanup that is less about tinkering and more about clearing space, especially if the team wants to keep reloading instead of settling for a slow decline.
Mac Jones, Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, Jake Brendel and JiAyir Brown all sit in different spots on the roster, but each comes with a reason the 49ers may eventually move on. Jones still looks like a player whose best path is elsewhere, Kirk is on a short-term deal, Robinson has not given the club much reason to bet bigger, Brendels role is tied to a position the team may want to upgrade, and Browns uneven run has kept his future from feeling secure. 49ers May Have A Real Chance To Fix Their Biggest Need
The 49ers have spent plenty of time looking for ways to sharpen the edges of their roster, and the conversation around that has drifted from the draft board to the trade market. Jerry Rice recently weighed in on how San Francisco should use Mike Evans, pointing to the value of simply trusting a big-bodied target in tight spaces, while Andrew Whitworth raised a different kind of caution by questioning how much confidence the 49ers really have when they invest premium draft capital in offensive tackles.
Now the more immediate roster question may be on the defensive side, where the 49ers are still viewed as needing another edge rusher to work alongside Nick Bosa. That has kept them tied to speculation around a possible Steelers trade, with the idea being that Pittsburgh could be open to moving a pass rusher if the right partner emerges. For San Francisco, it is the kind of opportunity that can change the shape of a defense quickly, even if the name attached to it has yet to come into focus. [Read more 🡒]
