Bengals Sign Joe Burrow's New Backup QB for His 22nd NFL Stop

The Cincinnati Bengals bring back veteran Josh Johnson, marking his 22nd NFL stop, as they continue to bolster their roster with key signings this offseason.

In the NFL offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals have been busy addressing their defensive needs with the additions of Bryan Cook, Jonathan Allen, and Boye Mafe. However, there's a crucial spot on offense that still needs attention: a reliable backup quarterback for Joe Burrow. While Joe Flacco was a tempting option, the Bengals opted for a familiar face from their 2013 roster.

The Bengals have signed Josh Johnson, a seasoned 40-year-old quarterback, to back up Burrow in the 2026 season. This marks Johnson's third stint with Cincinnati and his 22nd NFL stop since he first entered the league in 2009 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Josh Johnson's football journey is nothing short of remarkable. Since his debut, he has navigated an impressive list of teams across both the NFL and other professional leagues, totaling 26 stops. This extensive resume includes time with teams like the 49ers, Browns, Jets, and Ravens, among others.

Despite his extensive travels, Johnson has only started 11 NFL games. Last season, he stepped in for the Washington Commanders, going 1-1 in two starts.

He completed 63% of his passes, throwing for 372 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. While his starting opportunities have been limited, Johnson's vast experience makes him a dependable backup option.

Interestingly, this signing doesn't completely rule out the possibility of adding Joe Flacco to the roster. Johnson could still find himself as the third quarterback, providing depth and veteran savvy to the Bengals' quarterback room.

Josh Johnson's return to the Bengals adds another chapter to his storied career, highlighting his resilience and adaptability in professional football.
