Since Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017, six of his assistants have moved on to become head coaches. That pipeline is only getting busier. With Robert Saleh getting his second shot as a head coach with the Tennessee Titans, Jeff Hafley landing with the Miami Dolphins, Klint Kubiak taking charge of the Las Vegas Raiders, and Mike LaFleur being appointed as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, the 2026 season will feature five former 49er assistants in charge of teams.
That kind of track record naturally puts San Francisco’s current staff on the radar as the next hiring cycle approaches.
Of course, that interest will depend in part on what the 49ers do this season. If the team again settles in among the NFC’s best and the offense hums the way it usually does under Shanahan, the buzz around the assistants will only grow.
One name to watch is Klay Kubiak, the 49ers’ offensive coordinator in title, even though Shanahan handles play-calling on game day. The Athletic’s Jordan Rodrigue named him an assistant coach breakout candidate for 2026, pointing to a path that could look a lot like his brother’s rise.

He also was an assistant quarterbacks coach and passing game specialist. External observers may see a natural path for Kubiak similar to that of his brother, now-Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak, who worked under 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan as a passing game coordinator in 2023.”
Shanahan has long stressed that the offense is built through collaboration, even if he controls the final calls on Sundays. So if San Francisco’s attack keeps rolling, Kubiak’s name could start popping up in more serious conversations.
There’s also a defensive name worth mentioning in K.J. Wright. Raheem Morris may be out of head coaching chances, but Wright could draw attention as a coordinator candidate if he helps solve a linebacker group that still has plenty of questions heading into the season.
Still, Kubiak stands out as the clearest candidate to make a leap, whether that means a bigger coordinator role or eventually the top job. And with Shanahan’s staff turnover continuing to pile up, more movement could be coming if the 49ers’ offense delivers again.
