Aaron Donald Return Suddenly Feels Like A Real 49ers Problem

Aaron Donald hints at potential Rams comeback, signaling a desire for a full-time role amid ongoing contract discussions.

Aaron Donald’s possible return to the Rams is starting to look a lot less like a cameo and a lot more like a real football decision.

That was the big takeaway from Peter Schrager’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, where he laid out two important updates on the situation: the Rams and Donald “haven't even discussed money yet..” and, if he does come back, “He wants to go the full season.”

That detail changes the shape of the whole conversation. Donald wouldn’t be coming back as a part-time attraction or a few-snap novelty.

According to Schrager, “Aaron Donald is not going to come back as some 30-cent on the dollar version of Aaron Donald. He wants to be ready. ...

He wants to be fully where he was when he retired two years ago.”

So if the Rams do get him back, it’s not going to be a gimmick. It would mean Donald is aiming to return as a full-time player, not a reduced-role veteran.

That, naturally, brings up the biggest question: can he still do it after being retired for a few years?

The other issue is the contract, and Schrager said there have been no money talks yet. That part is hardly shocking, but it does mean the Rams still have a real negotiation ahead of them if this moves beyond rumor.

And if Donald is asking to play the full season, the deal gets even trickier. A limited role would make a smaller contract easier to justify. A full-time return, especially if he’s still close to the player he was before retiring, is a much bigger ask.

Still, the possibility is there. Donald was recently at the team facility and working out, and the idea of him rejoining the Rams remains alive. The two main hurdles now are the same ones Schrager pointed to: whether Donald can get back to his previous level, and how the contract gets worked out if he does.

49ers May Finally Have The Defensive Answer Fans Have Been Waiting For

As the 49ers head toward the start of the 2026 season, the conversation around the roster is still being shaped by the Brandon Aiyuk contract dispute on one side and the need for more stability on the other. On defense, the focus is turning to Alfred Collins, the 2025 draft pick who is expected to become a much bigger part of the line as San Francisco looks for growth from its young players and a cleaner bill of health after an injury-hit 2025.

Collins is the kind of interior presence the 49ers have been waiting to see blossom, especially with veteran Osa Odighizuwa alongside him to help anchor the front. If Collins takes the next step, it could give San Francisco a far more disruptive defensive identity and make life harder for opposing offenses from the jump, which is exactly the sort of answer this team has been searching for as camp and the regular season draw closer. Robert Saleh Just Said Something 49ers Fans Will Not Ignore

Robert Salehs name still carries weight around the 49ers, and his latest comments only keep that conversation alive. After leaving San Francisco to take over the Titans, Saleh recently looked back on his second stint with the club and pointed to the kind of resiliency and leadership that have long made the building stand out, a reminder of why his time there left such a strong impression.

For 49ers fans, the interesting part is not just the praise, but what it could mean down the road. If Saleh ever finds himself back on the market, San Francisco would make sense as a possible landing spot again, especially if a defensive coordinator opening comes up and the organization is looking for a familiar voice who already knows the room. 49ers Fans Hit With Another Disturbing Brandon Aiyuk Twist

Brandon Aiyuk has already spent plenty of this offseason in the rumor mill, but a troubling social media post has now pushed the 49ers wideout into a different kind of spotlight. The video has stirred backlash around the league and among San Francisco fans, adding another layer of unease to a situation that was already being watched closely because of his uncertain future.

The controversy also comes as the speculation around a possible move to Washington continues to linger, even if not everyone is buying it. Former NFL receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has publicly brushed aside the idea of Aiyuk landing with the Commanders, leaving the bigger questions around the receivers next step and what comes next for the 49ers still unresolved.
