The San Francisco 49ers may have already made their biggest move before the trade deadline.
After bringing back DeForest Buckner in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, the Niners suddenly look like a team that could stand pat and trust the roster they already have. That possibility is now getting plenty of attention, especially with the deadline set for November 11.
The move for Buckner was a major one. San Francisco sent a 2027 fourth-round pick to Indianapolis to land the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle, giving the defense a real boost after an offseason full of talk about how the team would improve its pass rush.
That’s why some around the team believe the Buckner deal may be the headline move, not the first step in a bigger spending spree. San Francisco 49ers on SI’s Niles Hall made that case, arguing the 49ers may not need to chase another splashy trade.
Fans and media have floated names like New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack, but Hall pointed to the idea that the 49ers can find answers internally.
The biggest question has been at wide receiver, where a strong offensive start has slowed because of injuries. Against the Atlanta Falcons last week, the receiver issues were impossible to miss, with a 49ers wideout not recording a catch until the second half. San Francisco was missing Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson.
That picture may be changing soon. On Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said all three wide receivers will have a chance to return after the bye week, which would make a pursuit of Wilson far less necessary. Recent developments from receiver Jordan Watkins also factor into that thinking.
The 49ers will also get back first-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling, who is expected to return at the end of the season.
The team has already added Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and Deebo Samuel, while also drafting De’Zhaun Stribling, so the logic behind another move is clear enough. But there’s also the other side of that argument: if another addition gets hurt, San Francisco could wind up right back where it started.
For now, the 49ers remain in contender mode, and Buckner alone may be enough to keep them on track for a playoff push. Whether they decide to add more before November 11 is the next question.

49ers Face A Brutal Maxx Crosby Dilemma Before Week 9
The 49ers are keeping an eye on Maxx Crosby as the trade chatter around the Raiders picks up, but this is not the kind of move that fits neatly into San Franciscos current roster-building plan. Las Vegas is dealing with a losing streak and a possible rebuild, which has naturally opened the door to inquiries on one of the leagues most disruptive edge rushers.
San Franciscos interest is complicated by the price of doing business after its recent blockbuster moves, along with the draft capital it would take to get involved. The timing adds another layer, too, since the 49ers are set to face the Raiders in Week 9, a game that could shape how aggressively Las Vegas considers moving Crosby at all. [Read more 🡒]
John Lynch Just Gave 49ers Fans A New Brock Purdy Debate
John Lynch spent part of the week reinforcing what the 49ers have seen from Brock Purdy since he took over the offense: a quarterback who can handle the mental load and keep getting better. The San Francisco executive praised Purdys ability to process information, take coaching, and improve his play, while also emphasizing the competitiveness and talent that have helped make him more than just a feel-good success story.
For a team that still gets dragged into quarterback chatter whenever the market starts moving, the timing matters. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Jets are not expected to trade Zach Wilson before the Nov. 10 deadline despite interest from multiple teams, a reminder that the leagues QB landscape can shift quickly even when a name seems available. Lynchs comments only add another layer to the Purdy conversation in San Francisco, where the debate is less about whether he belongs and more about how high his ceiling can climb. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Receiver Need Led To A Reunion Attempt That Fell Apart
With injuries thinning out their receiver room, the 49ers reportedly went looking for a familiar answer and checked in on Jauan Jennings. The idea had some logic to it: Jennings already knew the organization, and San Francisco had a clear need for help at the position, so a reunion briefly looked like a practical way to patch a roster hole.
Instead, the move unraveled before it could become real, and the reason speaks to how complicated the relationship has been. Jennings past with the 49ers has not exactly been smooth, and the reported breakdown left the team still searching for answers at receiver while a potential homecoming slipped away. [Read more 🡒]
