49ers Trade Deadline Outlook Just Got More Urgent Around Nick Bosa

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the 49ers could target the talented yet underutilized Jets edge rusher, Will McDonald IV, to bolster their pass rush.

The 49ers’ pass rush could use another jolt, and one name that has surfaced is a familiar kind of trade chip: a former first-round edge rusher whose role has shrunk.

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks pointed to Jets edge rusher Will McDonald IV as a possible candidate to move, noting that a change of scenery could help him while also giving a contender another piece for its defense. McDonald, a 2023 first-round pick, has seen his snaps trimmed since No. 2 overall pick David Bailey arrived and took over as the team’s designated pass rusher. That has pushed McDonald into more of a supporting role, which could make him available if the Jets decide draft capital is the better play.

The appeal is obvious. At 6-4 and 245 pounds, McDonald has shown enough juice to matter, piling up 23.5 career sacks and four forced fumbles in 54 games. Brooks suggested that a roster crowded with pass rushers could give GM Darren Mougey a reason to deal him and keep loading up on picks for the rebuild.

For San Francisco, the fit comes down to need. The edge group has been thin while Nick Bosa works back from a calf injury.

Bosa has played in only two games and has missed the last five, dating back to Week 3. On Tuesday, general manager John Lynch told KNBR that Bosa is “tracking well” to return after the bye week.

Even so, he still has not logged a sack this season.

In Bosa’s absence, Keion White has paced the group with 3.5 sacks. Rookie Romello Height has 1.5, while 2025 first-rounder Mykel Williams and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo have one apiece. Williams has also been limited in recent practices as he continues to work back from a 2025 ACL injury.

The interior has held up better. Rookie Gracen Halton and Osa Odighizuwa have two sacks each, and DeForest Buckner is now part of the mix after the recent trade.

So even if Bosa is on track to return, another edge addition would give the 49ers more depth and a little insurance if the calf issue lingers. The trade deadline is Nov. 10.

49ers Face A Brutal Maxx Crosby Dilemma Before Week 9

The 49ers are keeping an eye on Maxx Crosby as the trade chatter around the Raiders picks up, but this is not the kind of move that fits neatly into San Franciscos current roster-building plan. Las Vegas is dealing with a losing streak and a possible rebuild, which has naturally opened the door to inquiries on one of the leagues most disruptive edge rushers.

San Franciscos interest is complicated by the price of doing business after its recent blockbuster moves, along with the draft capital it would take to get involved. The timing adds another layer, too, since the 49ers are set to face the Raiders in Week 9, a game that could shape how aggressively Las Vegas considers moving Crosby at all. [Read more 🡒]

John Lynch Just Gave 49ers Fans A New Brock Purdy Debate

John Lynch spent part of the week reinforcing what the 49ers have seen from Brock Purdy since he took over the offense: a quarterback who can handle the mental load and keep getting better. The San Francisco executive praised Purdys ability to process information, take coaching, and improve his play, while also emphasizing the competitiveness and talent that have helped make him more than just a feel-good success story.

For a team that still gets dragged into quarterback chatter whenever the market starts moving, the timing matters. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Jets are not expected to trade Zach Wilson before the Nov. 10 deadline despite interest from multiple teams, a reminder that the leagues QB landscape can shift quickly even when a name seems available. Lynchs comments only add another layer to the Purdy conversation in San Francisco, where the debate is less about whether he belongs and more about how high his ceiling can climb. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Receiver Need Led To A Reunion Attempt That Fell Apart

With injuries thinning out their receiver room, the 49ers reportedly went looking for a familiar answer and checked in on Jauan Jennings. The idea had some logic to it: Jennings already knew the organization, and San Francisco had a clear need for help at the position, so a reunion briefly looked like a practical way to patch a roster hole.

Instead, the move unraveled before it could become real, and the reason speaks to how complicated the relationship has been. Jennings past with the 49ers has not exactly been smooth, and the reported breakdown left the team still searching for answers at receiver while a potential homecoming slipped away. [Read more 🡒]
