The Jonathan Taylor trade chatter just got a little louder, and now there’s a fresh wrinkle: a mystery NFC team has apparently checked in with the Indianapolis Colts.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Friday that he’s been hearing unexpected names as the deadline draws closer, including one team that hadn’t previously come up in the Taylor sweepstakes. “Like last time I’m on the phone with some people, I’m hearing some names that I’ve never heard before.
Never heard. I had a team text you this morning about Jonathan Taylor,” Schefter said.
“I’m like, this team on Jonathan? Like really?
Wow. So that’s the point.
That’s the great and exciting part of the deadline.”
Schefter didn’t name the club, but the timing matters. The Colts are sitting at 2-6 and appear willing to listen on some of their top talent, with Taylor standing out as one of the biggest names available. The 27-year-old has piled up 8,208 rushing yards and 77 touchdowns since arriving in Indianapolis in 2020, which is exactly why so many contenders have been tied to him.
The Broncos, Giants, Seahawks, and Vikings have already been mentioned as possible landing spots. And while Schefter’s report opens the door to another surprise bidder, it also adds fuel to the idea that the market is still shifting.
One team that has come under recent scrutiny is the San Francisco 49ers. Chris Simms recently floated the possibility of San Francisco going after Taylor, and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted, “People around the league ask Simms those questions, because 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is one of his best friends - and because they assume Simms knows what’s happening with the 49ers, even if he rarely if ever does.” Florio also drew a line to San Francisco’s 2022 move for Christian McCaffrey, a deal that stunned the league at the time.
A Taylor deal would create another major offensive twist in San Francisco, especially with the idea of pairing him with McCaffrey in the same backfield. But that remains speculation for now. No one has confirmed the 49ers’ interest, and Schefter’s mystery team was not identified as San Francisco.
The Colts and 49ers do have one recent trade connection: San Francisco landed defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from Indianapolis in 2020.
For now, Taylor’s future stays right in the middle of the deadline conversation, and Schefter’s latest update suggests the list of suitors may still be growing.

Brock Purdy Gets Real About A Brandon Aiyuk Reunion
Brock Purdy isnt carrying any hard feelings into the possibility of seeing Brandon Aiyuk again. The 49ers quarterback made it clear he still holds nothing but love and respect for the wideout, even after a long stretch apart, a sign that whatever has happened behind the scenes hasnt changed the personal side of the relationship.
Aiyuks situation remains one of the more interesting loose ends around San Francisco as the team moves forward. His future with the 49ers is still uncertain, but if he does show up around the facility, Purdys message suggests the door to a reunion would open with warmth rather than awkwardness. [Read more 🡒]
Brandon Aiyuk Situation Just Got Much Messier For The 49ers
Brandon Aiyuks next steps with the 49ers have become a lot more complicated as the sides sort through a contract issue that goes beyond the usual trade or release conversation. His agent said there are plans to meet with the team, but the situation now has the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association involved as the two sides work through how his contract and roster status should be handled.
What makes this especially messy is that the process could still end in agreement or move to arbitration, leaving Aiyuks future in San Francisco unresolved for now. For a 49ers team that has already had to navigate plenty of offseason noise, the uncertainty around one of its most prominent players adds another layer to a situation that is clearly not close to being settled. 49ers Face Two Raiders Threats That Could Ruin A Post-Bye Reset
The 49ers come out of the bye with a clear defensive emphasis, and the timing is right after a stretch in which San Francisco has been looking for more consistency on that side of the ball. Adding DeForest Buckner would fit that broader push for sturdier play up front, especially with the next opponent offering a mix of problems that can make a reset feel a lot less comfortable than it sounds.
Las Vegas has been shaky enough defensively to invite confidence, but the Raiders also have a knack for creating turnovers, which can flip a game fast if San Francisco gets loose with the ball. On the other side, the passing game has found enough rhythm to matter, with Kirk Cousins and Brock Bowers giving the Raiders a couple of routes to stress a defense that wants the bye week to show up on the field immediately.
