The 49ers enter the regular season with the kind of financial flexibility that can shape a trade deadline. No team has more cap space in 2026 than San Francisco, and Over the Cap has the Niners at $45.8 million - more than $12 million clear of Robert Saleh’s Titans.
That kind of room matters, even if teams always have to keep future deals and extensions in view. On paper, San Francisco is over the cap in 2028 with just 42 players, but that figure still includes Brandon Aiyuk’s $42.35 million cap hit that year. The expectation here is that Aiyuk won’t be on the roster in 2028.
That flexibility gives the 49ers a real path to adding an impact player before the trade deadline. General manager John Lynch made it clear the front office can only go so far without the team doing its part first.
Lynch told The San Francisco Standard, That’s not like a charge to a team, ‘Hey, you want us to keep adding? Go earn it.
But that’s just the reality of this league. Put yourself in position, then if it fits and the deal’s right, then yeah.
I think our history shows we’re not averse to that, but I do believe you have to put yourself in position to even have those conversations.”
The need could be especially sharp on the edge. San Francisco has been tied to pass rushers all offseason, and that conversation only gets louder after Sam Okauyinonu was ruled out for Week 1 with a foot injury. If Sam O is sidelined for multiple weeks and Mykel Williams misses the first four games on the PUP, the depth issue gets serious fast.
Maxx Crosby is still on the radar, and there was also mention of several possible trade targets in a feed post earlier this week. But the name that stands out as the biggest swing is Jared Verse.
Verse is 26 and has two years left on his rookie contract. In theory, the 49ers could pick up his fifth-year option.
More realistically, he’d be the kind of player you bring in and then extend after the season. That won’t come cheap, but the upside is obvious.
There’s also the practical side: he’d likely be easier to convince than the Browns, and there’s the extra edge of getting a shot at the Rams twice a year - and maybe again in the playoffs.
