49ers Suddenly Have One Veteran Fix For Their Left Guard Problem

With uncertainty looming over the starting left guard position, the 49ers could gain a strategic edge by signing veteran Kevin Zeitler before training camp begins.

The San Francisco 49ers are heading toward training camp with one spot still looking shaky: left guard.

For now, Connor Colby is in front in that competition, with rookie Carver Willis and veteran Robert Jones also in the mix. But that trio doesn’t exactly scream certainty, and the 49ers have enough at stake to know they can’t leave the position to chance.

That’s why Kevin Zeitler stands out as a possible answer. The former Tennessee Titans guard has been floated as a fit, and Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton made the case for San Francisco to bring him in before camp.

"The San Francisco 49ers have a need at left guard following the departure of Spencer Burford in free agency. They should consider a more experienced upgrade over 2025 seventh-rounder Connor Colby," wrote Moton.

"Zeitler can be a strong asset in head coach Kyle Shanahan's run-heavy offense, which has ranked within the top 10 in carries for four of the previous five seasons. If he's able to flip from right to left guard for the short term, the longtime veteran can be a bridge starter while rookie fourth-rounder Carver Willis develops in a backup role."

That logic fits the roster situation. The 49ers have not settled the left guard job, and that instability has already shown up in their run game. Without a dependable starter there, the offense never got the kind of consistency it needed on the ground.

Zeitler would bring experience and a solid all-around profile. According to Pro Football Focus grades, he finished last season No. 9 in pass protection and No. 20 in run blocking. He also gave up 16 pressures and four sacks.

On paper, he’s the kind of player who could step in, compete, and maybe stabilize the spot quickly. But that doesn’t mean the 49ers are ready to make the move.

Right now, they appear committed to the group already on hand. Zeitler would likely only enter the conversation if the current competition looks underwhelming after a couple of weeks in pads.

There’s also the age factor. Zeitler is 36, and that may be enough to keep San Francisco from making a run at him unless the left guard battle turns in a direction they don’t like.

49ers Pass Rush Plans Just Took A Stunning Turn With Bryce Huff

Bryce Huffs path took an unexpected turn after his football career intersected with a far different kind of project, one rooted in mechanical engineering and an environmental problem he has been working on with his brother. The effort focuses on a solution for extinguishing battery fires, and Huff has been using the connections he built through football to help move the venture forward with an international manufacturer.

For the 49ers, it is a reminder that roster plans can change in a hurry when a player sees a future beyond the field. Huff has said he has no regrets about stepping away, pointing to the short shelf life of pro football and the need to have a plan once the game is over. [Read more 🡒]

This Overlooked 49ers Back Could Own The Preseason Spotlight

Sincere McCormick has spent the offseason as the kind of player who can disappear in a hurry, the 90th name on the 49ers 90-man roster and the sort of back who has to make every touch count. Even so, he has a real opening to get noticed in August, with San Francisco carrying depth behind Christian McCaffrey and looking likely to keep its star out of the preseason to protect him.

That leaves McCormick in position to get some late-game work, exactly the kind of extended look fringe players need when rosters are still in flux. He also has something on his side beyond opportunity: his previous stint with the Raiders hinted at a runner who can handle real carries, and this month could be his chance to turn a modest camp role into something more meaningful for whoever is watching. 49ers Suddenly Linked To A Brandon Aiyuk Trade With QB Stakes

Brandon Aiyuks absence has already turned into one of the stranger subplots around the 49ers, with the wide receiver not having played since October 2024 and his standing in the organization clearly deteriorating. For a team that has spent years building around offensive continuity, the possibility of moving on from a player of Aiyuks caliber would be a major shift, especially with his situation now viewed through the lens of a trade market rather than a return timeline.

What makes the chatter even more intriguing is the quarterback angle attached to it, because any move involving Aiyuk would ripple beyond the receiver room and into San Franciscos plans under center. The 49ers have already been trying to stabilize that position, and a deal built around a young passer would raise the possibility of another reset while adding more uncertainty to Mac Jones long-term role with the team.
