The 49ers’ wide receiver situation has gone from promising to precarious in a hurry, and now a potential trade target is getting attention before San Francisco even opens the 2026 season.
With kickoff just five days away and the Rams waiting in Australia, the Niners are still trying to sort through the fallout from a rough stretch of injuries. What was supposed to be a receiver group boosted by major offseason additions has been undercut by losses that changed the picture fast.
Mike Evans remains the headliner of the room after arriving as San Francisco’s premier free agent pickup, and Deebo Samuel is back in the mix as well. The Niners will rely heavily on veteran wideouts and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, and they could afford to add some extra depth to their receiver room. Buffalo Bills receiver Keon Coleman, meanwhile, could use a fresh start.
The 2024 33rd overall pick hasn't developed into a reliable go-to receiver in Buffalo. He wasn't always even part of the game plan in 2025, though he does have a supporter in former offensive coordinator and current head coach Joe Brady."
Coleman has not made much of an impact for Buffalo, but the appeal is obvious enough: he was a highly drafted player with talent that showed up in college, and a new environment could be what he needs.
At the same time, the Bills’ doubts about him have been hard to miss. That doesn’t automatically make him a bust, but it does mean he would still have to reset the narrative somewhere else.
For San Francisco, the math is simple. A receiver room built around Samuel and Evans, with rookie De'Zhaun Stribling in the mix, already looks better than what the team had a year ago. Adding Coleman would be a gamble, but one that could make the group deeper if it hits.
Whether the 49ers actually pull the trigger is another matter. If they do, and Coleman finally takes off, it could end up as one of the biggest moves of the 2026 NFL season.
