49ers Suddenly Have A Mike Evans Concern They Cant Ignore

Mike Evans' absence from 49ers practice raises concerns about the wide receiver lineup as the team gears up for the 2026 NFL season.

The San Francisco 49ers’ training camp took a hit Monday when Mike Evans was held out with a quad strain, a setback that comes as the team tries to build toward the 2026 NFL season.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on X, formerly Twitter: “49ers WR Mike Evans is not practicing today due to a quad strain,”

There’s no word yet on when the strain happened or how long Evans could be sidelined, but it’s the kind of update San Francisco did not want this early in camp.

Evans arrived in the offseason as one of the 49ers’ headline additions, joining the team after spending his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 49ers brought him in to strengthen a receiver group that suddenly needs all the help it can get.

That urgency grew even more after the news that Ricky Pearsall will be out for the year because of an injury that lingered from last season and carried through the offseason.

Evans has been remarkably durable for much of his career, though injuries have become more of a factor in recent seasons. He missed a large portion of last year in Tampa Bay with a broken collarbone.

Now 32, and 33 when the season begins, Evans is at a stage where teams are watching the mileage closely. Even so, he still brings the kind of traits that can change a game: a real deep threat, strong hands, and the ability to win above smaller defensive backs.

The 49ers open their season on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams.

49ers Add Needed Depth Behind Christian McCaffrey After Playoff Exit

After a 12-5 season ended in a playoff loss to the Seahawks, the 49ers began filling in some of the depth questions that can linger after a strong year falls short. Their latest move was to sign running back Khalil Herbert to a one-year contract, a clear attempt to give Christian McCaffrey a more experienced backup as San Francisco looks to keep its offense stocked for another run.

Herbert was not the only addition on the defensive side of the ledger, either. The 49ers also agreed to a one-year deal with defensive lineman Titus Leo and brought in edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo for a workout, reminders that the front office is still sorting through ways to round out the roster before the next stage of the offseason takes hold. 49ers Running Back Move Suddenly Feels Bigger Than Just Camp Depth

The 49ers made a pair of low-profile camp moves this week, adding a running back and a defensive lineman while trimming two names from the roster. It was the kind of transaction that usually gets filed away as August housekeeping, with the team trying to stay afloat through the grind of training camp and the injuries that tend to come with it.

But the need behind it is harder to ignore. San Francisco is dealing with issues at both running back and edge defender, and the additions are aimed at keeping those spots from getting too thin while camp pushes on. For a team that has spent years valuing backfield depth and defensive line rotation, even these seemingly minor moves can signal how quickly the roster picture is changing. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Still Hunting For Pass Rush Help After Latest Workouts

The 49ers are still taking a close look at ways to bolster their pass rush, bringing in three edge rushers for workouts as they sort through options for the defensive line. Andre Carter II, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Xavier Thomas all have NFL experience, and each offers a different kind of depth possibility for a group that can always use more help up front.

Okoronkwo has spent time with the Eagles and other teams, Carter has been with the Vikings and Raiders, and Thomas has had stints with the Cardinals and Texans. For San Francisco, the question now is less about name recognition than fit, as the team keeps evaluating which of these veteran additions could make the strongest case for a roster spot.
