The San Francisco 49ers got a break inside a bad break with De’Zhaun Stribling, but they still lost one of their most promising rookies for a stretch.
Stribling, who left Thursday night’s season-opening win over the Los Angeles Rams with a non-contact ankle injury, has been diagnosed with a deltoid sprain in his ankle and is expected to miss at least a month, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. His Achilles is intact, which is a major relief after the initial fear when he couldn’t put weight on his left leg and had to be carted off the field.
There is still some uncertainty ahead. Stribling is seeking additional opinions, surgery is not currently planned, and it remains a possibility.
Even with the diagnosis landing on the better side of the worst-case scenario, the injury hits San Francisco in a receiver room that is already thin. The 49ers drafted Stribling No. 33 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he looked ready to help right away after a strong summer. In training camp and the preseason, he emerged as one of the team’s brightest young players, catching 11 passes for 109 yards on 13 preseason targets.
His role was only supposed to grow after Ricky Pearsall was lost for the season with a knee injury and Christian Kirk began the year on injured reserve because of a calf issue.
For now, San Francisco will have to keep leaning on Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson. That trio handled the opener just fine, combining for all three of Brock Purdy’s touchdown passes in the 49ers’ 27-7 win over the division-rival Rams.
So Sunday’s update lands in that awkward middle ground. The 49ers avoided a far more devastating injury, but they also lost a player they believed could matter quickly on offense. The next step is getting Stribling fully healthy before bringing him back, not pushing him back early.
San Francisco has enough veteran help to get through the short term. Still, the 49ers are already being forced to test their depth far sooner than they wanted.
