Kurtis Rourke finally got his first NFL action for the 49ers, and for most of Friday night, he made it count.
A year after being drafted by San Francisco in 2025 and spending his rookie season sidelined by a collegiate ACL tear, the second-year quarterback opened the preseason against the Tennessee Titans with a chance to put real tape on film. With Mac Jones not dressing and Brock Purdy locked in as the starter, Rourke’s job was straightforward: show enough to strengthen his case as a capable backup option.
He did that early. Before leaving the game, Rourke completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards and posted a 96.7 passer rating. He was clearly ahead of fellow depth quarterback Adrian Martinez in the competition for the QB3 job.
Then came the play that changed everything.
With fewer than 5 yards to the goal line, the 49ers called a quarterback draw for Rourke, and he absorbed a hit to the ribs. After struggling to breathe, he was taken to the hospital, where head coach Kyle Shanahan said he was found to have broken ribs.

Shanahan said he wasn’t sure whether Rourke would miss time, but the injury could have major consequences if it keeps him out for any stretch. Rourke and Martinez were fighting for a place on the 53-man roster, and any missed preseason time could cost the Canadian-born quarterback a real shot to lock down that spot.
The bigger frustration for San Francisco is that Rourke had already shown enough to justify a little caution. Third-string quarterback injuries usually don’t draw much attention, but the 49ers know how important that spot can become. Purdy was one of those finds in his rookie year.
For now, though, Rourke’s promising debut may end up being remembered for the hit that ended it.
