The 49ers have moved quickly to shore up their backfield while Christian McCaffrey deals with a setback that has kept him out of multiple training camp practices.
McCaffrey has been sidelined by what the team has described as “tightness” and soreness, and San Francisco is treating the situation with caution. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the star running back is dealing with intense muscle tightness, and the team has kept him completely out of live drills as a result.
That approach fits the way the 49ers are handling one of the most important pieces of their offense. McCaffrey remains the player who changes everything for San Francisco, the unique “unicorn” who opens up Kyle Shanahan’s playbook and gives the offense a different level of force. The team is trying to make sure a minor issue does not become something bigger.
There’s also recent history behind the concern. Around this point last season, McCaffrey was working through a nagging calf issue. Given the demands of his running style and the stress it puts on his lower body over the course of a season, the 49ers are being careful with the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.
To help cover the backfield while McCaffrey gets the time he needs, San Francisco officially signed veteran running back Zamir White.
White was a fourth-round pick in 2022 and has now played four seasons in the league. In the 2025 NFL regular season, he appeared in 6 games for the Las Vegas Raiders, finishing with 12 carries for 32 rushing yards, a 2.7 average, no rushing touchdowns, and 4 receptions for 24 receiving yards.
For now, the move gives the 49ers some immediate depth behind McCaffrey while he focuses on his rehabilitation program.

Brock Purdy Looked Sharp But One 49ers Problem Kept Showing Up
Brock Purdy drew plenty of attention for looking sharp in the joint practice against the Titans, but the bigger takeaway for the 49ers was how often the operation around him still looked unfinished. The day had its share of practice skirmishes, and the offensive line remained a point of focus as San Francisco continues sorting out protection and interior stability while Christian McCaffrey rests with tightness, Zamir White has been brought in to help the backfield, and Nick Bosa works his way back from a torn ACL.
The left guard spot is the one that keeps hanging over camp, and it is hard to ignore how much that position matters for a team trying to settle its offense before the real games begin. San Francisco has already been forced to keep adjusting pieces around the line, and with the competition there still evolving, the 49ers do not exactly have the luxury of treating it like a minor summer detail. 49ers Get Their First Real Look At De'Zhaun Stribling's Upside
The 49ers are about to get their first real preseason look at rookie wide receiver DeZhaun Stribling, and the opener against the Titans should tell them plenty about where he fits. San Francisco wants to see more than just basic camp flashes here, with an eye on how he handles different routes, shifts around the formation and brings value after the catch.
For a team always searching for receiver depth and playmaking help, Striblings debut is less about the box score than the details that show up in August. If he can separate in more than one spot and create something once the ball is in his hands, it will give the 49ers a better read on how quickly he can contribute to the offense. [Read more 🡒]
