49ers Suddenly Face A Christian McCaffrey Concern They Can't Ignore

Christian McCaffrey's injury could impact the 49ers' offense as they navigate his uncertain status for Week 7.

Christian McCaffrey’s day took a sharp turn in the second quarter against the Atlanta Falcons, with the 49ers star dealing with a thigh injury and listed as questionable to return.

McCaffrey went into the blue medical tent early in the second quarter and did not play on San Francisco’s third offensive drive. Fox later showed a replay from the 49ers’ opening series, when McCaffrey came up awkwardly after a tackle. He still finished that drive with a touchdown, but he also spent time with the medical staff after the second drive.

There was at least one sideline moment that stood out too: regardless of his injury status, Kyle Shanahan came down to the field while McCaffrey was being stretched and showed him something on a tablet.

Even without McCaffrey, the 49ers kept moving. Rookie Kaelon Black stepped in and broke free for a 30-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Then came the latest update at 11:05 a.m.: McCaffrey returned to the 49ers locker room as San Francisco’s offense marched down the field on its fourth drive. Fox cameras showed him coming out of the blue medical tent earlier in that series, but he never came back out to the field. As the offense neared midfield, he headed back to the locker room.

By that point, McCaffrey had already stacked up four carries for 29 yards and a touchdown, plus three catches for 45 yards. The 49ers were up 14-9 midway through the second quarter, though Black coughed up the ball at the end of that fourth drive and the Falcons recovered.

49ers May Already Have A Problem With Raheem Morris

Raheem Morris arrived in San Francisco as the answer to a major defensive change, stepping in as defensive coordinator after Robert Salehs departure. For Kyle Shanahan, the hire was about stability as much as scheme, and Morris has already fit the profile of a coach who can help keep the 49ers defense steady while the rest of the staff and roster continue to evolve.

The long-term question is whether that arrangement lasts. Shanahan would like Morris to stay in place, and Morris has already acknowledged how rare head-coaching openings can be while sounding content in his current role, but that kind of success tends to travel quickly in the NFL. For now, it is only a possibility hanging over the partnership, yet it is the sort of future issue San Francisco may have to think about sooner than it would like. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Great Takes A Public Shot At Mike Evans' Game

Terrell Owens used his podcast to weigh in on Mike Evans game, and the Hall of Fame receiver did not frame the Buccaneers star as a burner who wins purely on athleticism. Owens made clear he respects what Evans has accomplished, pointing to a career built on production and consistency, including his run of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons.

What Owens and Todd Gurley were getting at was the way Evans has carved out his success in the league, with route nuance and the kind of quarterback support that keeps a receiver productive year after year. It was a familiar kind of ex-player debate, part praise and part critique, and one that put a spotlight on how Evans greatness is viewed by peers who understand the margins at that position. Christian McCaffrey Suddenly Looms Over 49ers Biggest Falcons Question

Mike Evans injury has already forced the 49ers to adjust their plans for Atlanta, and it only adds to the pressure on an offense that may need to lean more heavily on Christian McCaffrey. With the wide receiver group thinned out, San Francisco has been exploring ways to get McCaffrey more involved as a pass catcher, a wrinkle that could help offset what it lost when Evans went down.

The uncertainty, though, is in how exactly that role will look once the game plan is finalized. McCaffrey has not sounded fully sure of where his usage will land, and with the Falcons looming, the 49ers may not get a true read on it until closer to kickoff. For a team already juggling injury concerns at receiver, his deployment could wind up being one of the more important pieces of the offensive puzzle. [Read more 🡒]
