The story first surfaced on Casino Guru, an Estonia-based online gambling site, where longtime NFL reporter Jason La Canfora wrote Monday that there is “turmoil and unrest in this ownership group” after a chaotic offseason. He also said, “The future of this franchise is the source of considerable chatter around the league.” According to La Canfora’s anonymous sources, things are “pretty ugly inside the family right now” and the Yorks are “scrambling.”
The piece points to longtime executive Paraag Marathe’s departure from 49ers-specific duties, with his focus shifting to the two soccer teams the organization owns in the United Kingdom, as an early sign of trouble. La Canfora expanded on that view during a morning appearance on 95.7 The Game, where he said, “There’s the falling out with Paraag, and I’m told that was over personal stuff, not really business - friendship stuff,” La Canfora said.
“Like, ‘Oh my god, you’re going through a divorce and you’re getting remarried and I barely knew! What’s that all about?’
Like, there’s a lot of weird-ish that’s been going on there forever, for months. So ... it certainly looks to people around the league like things are falling apart there a little bit.”
From there, La Canfora framed the situation as more than just an ownership dust-up. He described it as evidence of “a team ... that is in steep decline,” argued that an older roster is making its “last stand,” and went as far as to suggest Kyle Shanahan could wind up in Washington after his contract expires in 2027.
That kind of report has been enough for plenty of Niners coverage to sound the alarm, but the source matters here. La Canfora was once regarded as a top NFL insider at NFL Network, but his track record has taken hits over the years.
In 2015, he said there was a “ good probability ” Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell would land in Washington, only for both to end up in Chicago. Three days later, he said he’d be “ shocked ” if Adam Gase reunited with John Fox on the Bears, and Gase later became the team’s offensive coordinator.
In 2017, he called Anthony Lynn a “ virtual lock ” to be promoted from interim to full-time head coach of the Bills, but Buffalo hired Sean McDermott 10 days later. A week after that miss became official, he reported that the Ravens had made “ considerable progress ” on a new deal for Zach Orr and that a press conference would announce it, only for Orr to retire later that week because of a spinal condition.
In 2019, he said he “ would not anticipate ” Terrell Suggs going to Kansas City after the Chiefs claimed him on waivers, and Suggs ended up playing five games, including Super Bowl 54, for the team. Then in 2023, he spent the offseason saying Lamar Jackson’s time in Baltimore was over and that he’d likely land in the NFC South, only for Jackson to sign an extension that made him the highest-paid player in the league at the time and go on to earn first-team All-Pro honors with the Ravens.
La Canfora also spent about six years as a local radio host in Baltimore, where he became known for loud critiques of team leadership.
Still, this could be a case where his sources have landed on something real, with Casino Guru serving as the first outlet to carry the story nationally. Even so, La Canfora added a notable hedge around the Shanahan angle: “Of course, a lot would have to occur before we got anywhere close to that.”
