In the wake of their playoff exit last January, the San Francisco 49ers are preparing to part ways with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. General Manager John Lynch confirmed that Aiyuk has likely played his last game for the team, marking the end of a tumultuous two-year stint.
The pressing question now is how the 49ers will proceed with Aiyuk, who has become notably absent from the scene. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently provided some insight during his appearance on Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take podcast. According to Schefter, a trade seems unlikely, and an outright release on the first day of the league year appears to be the probable outcome.
"He'll be released on the first day of the league year, I would think," Schefter noted. The 49ers have engaged in numerous trade discussions with various teams, but circumstances have changed. Aiyuk's behavior, particularly on social media, has altered the dynamics, making a trade more complicated.
The 49ers previously considered trading Aiyuk, a 2020 first-round pick, before the 2024 season amid contract negotiations. A last-minute deal kept him from being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, an early-season injury led to a significant setback. Aiyuk suffered a severe ACL and MCL injury, sidelining him for the remainder of that season and all of 2025, which has significantly diminished his trade value.
Despite the challenges, there's a slim chance the 49ers might explore trade options to recoup some value. The Washington Commanders have been mentioned as a potential suitor due to Aiyuk's college connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, Schefter suggests this is a long shot.
"We don't know what he's physically going to be like. His knee was shredded," Schefter explained.
While the connection with Daniels might prompt interest from Washington, the likelihood of a trade remains uncertain. Teams such as the Steelers, Commanders, and Patriots might still inquire, but a concrete move seems improbable.
Ultimately, the 49ers are expected to explore all avenues but may find no viable trade partners. As Schefter indicated, Lynch and the 49ers are likely to release Aiyuk once the new league year begins, closing this chapter in San Francisco.
