49ers Stun Fans with Bold New Pass-Catcher Acquisition

The 49ers are eyeing a dynamic draft pick to bolster their receiving corps and offset recent roster changes, as veteran Mike Evans steps in as the new No. 1 target.

The San Francisco 49ers made waves in free agency by signing veteran receiver Mike Evans, instantly boosting their receiving corps with a clear No. 1 option. However, the unit remains in transition, especially with the departure of Kendrick Bourne and the potential exits of Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk.

Looking ahead, the 49ers have an opportunity to further strengthen their offense in the 2026 NFL Draft. Holding the No. 27 overall pick, they could opt to bring in a rookie receiver to complement Evans and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall.

In a recent mock draft, The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner projected Indiana receiver Omar Cooper Jr. as the 49ers' choice at No. 27.

This selection would address the need at receiver, even with looming questions about the offensive line, particularly concerning Trent Williams’ contract at left tackle. The recent signing of swing tackle Vederian Lowe adds some flexibility, making a receiver pick more viable in the first round.

Omar Cooper Jr. is an intriguing prospect for the 49ers, drawing comparisons to former star Deebo Samuel. His college quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, likened Cooper Jr. to a "prime Deebo Samuel," which should excite the 49ers' faithful.

Last season, Cooper Jr. recorded 69 receptions for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 74 rushing yards and a touchdown on three carries. His physical profile is reminiscent of Samuel's, standing at 6-foot and weighing around 204 pounds, just shy of Samuel's 214 pounds.

As the 49ers contemplate their options at No. 27, upgrading their offense seems paramount, especially after losing key playmakers in 2025 and with George Kittle recovering from a torn Achilles. Adding Cooper Jr. could be a strategic move to bolster their offensive arsenal.
