The future of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with the San Francisco 49ers is as uncertain as ever, adding more intrigue to the offseason narrative.
The plot thickened on Monday when the 49ers inked veteran receiver Christian Kirk to a one-year, $6 million deal. This move, discussed by insider Adam Schefter on "NFL on ESPN," sheds light on the 49ers' strategy and Aiyuk’s standing with the team.
"They're stacking up on weapons," Schefter noted. "Christian Kirk is the newest addition to the receiving corps.
They need depth there. It's clear they're planning to part ways with Brandon Aiyuk at some point this offseason.
But remember, Aiyuk's contract has no guaranteed money left."
Schefter emphasized that the 49ers are in no hurry to make a decision on Aiyuk, waiting for the right trade offer to surface for the talented yet troubled receiver.
Despite reports suggesting an imminent release, Schefter clarified, "They're not planning to release him anytime soon. With no guaranteed money, they can afford to be patient and see if any trade value emerges."
Aiyuk, who missed the entire 2025 season due to a torn ACL and MCL, saw his 2026 guaranteed money voided by the team last November. This followed a four-year, $120 million extension he signed in August 2024.
Adding another layer to the discussion, retired Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman weighed in on his podcast, defending the 49ers' approach with Aiyuk.
"Some say the 49ers are holding him hostage, but I disagree," Sherman stated. "Considering his recent injury and lack of game tape, what would his market value be in free agency? If I were Aiyuk, I'd prefer a trade under my current contract rather than trying to secure a new deal post-injury."
Drafted 25th overall in 2020, Aiyuk has been a key player for the 49ers, amassing 4,305 yards on 294 receptions with 25 touchdowns over 69 games. As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on how the 49ers will navigate this critical decision.
