49ers Stayed Unbeaten Thanks To A Defensive Formula Fans Will Debate

Despite injuries and challenges, the 49ers' secondary showcased their depth and resilience to secure a key victory over the Broncos in Week 4.

The 49ers had to piece things together on the fly against Denver, and the back end held. San Francisco came away with a 24-14 win in Week 4 to move to 4-0, and the story of the afternoon was a defense that absorbed injuries, shuffled bodies and still found enough answers to keep the Broncos under control.

Malik Mustapha was the standout when Pro Football Focus handed out the grades. The free safety logged 21 defensive snaps and came away with an 81.5 overall mark, the best on the team. His work in coverage was especially sharp: a team-high 73.7 grade across 15 coverage snaps, no receptions allowed and a pass breakup to his name.

Ji'Ayir Brown also did his part as the steadying force in the deep middle. Over 66 snaps, he posted a 69.9 overall grade and a 70.1 coverage grade while allowing just two catches for eight yards. Rookie cornerback Renardo Green added a solid 65.4 grade on 67 snaps, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw finished with a 68.3 overall mark in 58 snaps against his former team.

The top five also included defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez, who made the most of limited work. He earned a 68.7 grade on 25 snaps, giving San Francisco another useful piece in a game where depth mattered more than ever.

Not everyone came through cleanly. Cornerback Upton Stout had the roughest grade on the defense at 38.8 over 37 snaps before leaving with a shoulder injury.

Denver attacked him eight times, and he gave up eight completions for 80 yards, which showed up in a 35.5 coverage grade. Defensive tackle Naquan Jones checked in at 42.6, defensive end Keion White at 48.1, linebacker Jaden Dugger at 49.4 and defensive tackle Gracen Halton at 49.8.

San Francisco still managed to affect Bo Nix without finishing with a sack. The defense produced 16 total pressures from seven different players.

Osa Odighizuwa posted the best pass-rush grade on the team at 75.5 and finished with two pressures and two tackles. Greenlaw led the way with four pressures, White added three, and Romello Height, Ogbo Okoronkwo and Valdez each contributed two.

Mustapha also got home once on a blitz. Matthew Judon, meanwhile, had a quiet day with a 50.1 pass-rush grade and no pressures on 15 snaps.

The run defense had its own bright spots. Marques Sigle earned a team-best 73.6 run-defense grade and also posted the top tackling mark on the team at 84.6 after making six tackles without a miss. Odighizuwa, on the other hand, received the lowest run-defense grade of the game at 31.8.

Fred Warner had one of those rare games where the numbers didn’t look like his usual standard. The All-Pro linebacker finished with a 57.4 overall grade, a 52.5 coverage mark and a 35.1 tackling grade after being charged with two missed tackles.

Even with the injuries and the uneven individual performances, Raheem Morris’ defense kept its footing. The unit didn’t break when the game started to tilt toward attrition, and that was enough to leave Denver stuck at 14 points and San Francisco still unbeaten.

49ers Suddenly Have A Defensive Line Problem They Can't Ignore

The 49ers defensive front has already been stretched thin by injuries, and the timing could hardly be worse with a divisional meeting against the Seahawks coming up in Week 5. San Francisco has spent the early part of the season juggling availability and recovery on the line, while the defense as a whole has taken hits in production that make the issue impossible to brush aside.

Against that backdrop, the trade market is starting to loom larger than usual, with names like Vita Vea and Will McDonald IV surfacing as possible fits. The 49ers have not hidden the reality that help may be needed, but the bigger question is how aggressive they want to be, and whether they can patch the problem before another wave of missed games puts even more pressure on the rest of the defense. 49ers Face A Seattle Test That Could Silence The Hype

The 49ers have spent the first month of the season drawing plenty of national praise, even with a long injury list hanging over them. Several major sports media outlets currently have San Francisco ranked No. 1 heading into Week 5, and The Athletics postseason simulator has the team with the best odds in the league to reach the playoffs, grab the top seed and win the Super Bowl. It is a flattering place to be this early, especially for a roster that has already had to navigate the kind of health issues that can quickly reshape a season.

Still, the schedule is about to offer a better read on how real all that hype is. San Francisco has a Seattle test on deck, and later matchups with undefeated teams like the Vikings and Chiefs will add even more pressure to the conversation. For all the early admiration, the 49ers have not yet gone through the full stretch of games that usually separates a favorite from a true contender. [Read more 🡒]

Brock Purdy Is Entering A New Conversation 49ers Fans Will Love

Brock Purdy keeps finding new company in the league conversation, and this one is especially flattering for the 49ers. Foxs Colin Cowherd recently held up Purdys early-season performance alongside Denver quarterback Bo Nix, using the contrast to underline how smooth and efficient Purdy has looked while others have worked through growing pains. For San Francisco, it is another sign that the quarterback taken last in 2021 has moved well beyond novelty and into something much bigger.

Purdys strong start to the 2026 season has him sitting among the leading MVP candidates, which is a remarkable place for a player who once entered the league with almost no draft-day fanfare. The more he stacks clean, composed performances, the more he seems to become a benchmark rather than a question, a standard other quarterbacks are measured against instead of the other way around.
