49ers Star Pushes Back As Terrell Owens Sparks Respect Debate

With the 49ers riding high this season, Terrell Owens' controversial remarks about Mike Evans have sparked a fiery defense from those within the organization, highlighting the ongoing debate over player performances and legacy in the NFL.

A clip from “Get to the Point Podcast” has turned into a quick-fire back-and-forth involving Terrell Owens, Mike Evans, and one 49ers defender who wasn’t letting the Hall of Famer’s comments slide.

Owens said he watched Evans during a game and came away thinking he could do the same thing. He pointed to Evans’ route running and downplayed what he saw, saying, “We were watching the game.

Mike Evans was playing, and I was like, 'Look at his routes. I can do that.'

It’s not like he’s blazing speed; he just knows how to run routes, knows where to go, and then the quarterback can save you. He was really like just catching some, like, average plays,” Owens said.

He doubled down by saying he believes he could “absolutely” do what he saw from Evans, a take that set off plenty of reaction online and drew the attention of 49ers defensive back Deommodore Lenoir.

Lenoir responded directly to Owens on social media, writing, “Mannnn noo you can't Mike 1 of 1 Stop it Every WR know where they going Bad Take,” along with multiple crying laughing emojis at the start of the comment.

Owens, now 52 and long retired, has spent years as one of the NFL’s most recognizable receivers. He starred with the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and 49ers, led the league in receiving touchdowns three times, and made six Pro Bowls.

The comments also landed in the middle of an injury-hit stretch for Evans. He left his team’s “Monday Night Football” game against the Washington Commanders with a non-contact right Achilles injury and fractured ribs, and he has already been ruled out for this Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Through six games this season, Evans has 27 receptions for 420 yards and three touchdowns for the 49ers. Owens said Evans also has a quarterback who “saves” him with Brock Purdy.

Evans’ previous stops included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played with Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. He was the receiving touchdown co-leader in 2023 and has also earned six Pro Bowl selections.

The one major thing Evans has that Owens never did is a Super Bowl ring, though Owens could argue Brady had something to do with that. And in San Francisco, the bigger picture still looks strong: the 49ers started 6-0, and Purdy is already in the early MVP conversation.

49ers May Already Have A Problem With Raheem Morris

Raheem Morris arrived in San Francisco as the answer to a major defensive change, stepping in as defensive coordinator after Robert Salehs departure. For Kyle Shanahan, the hire was about stability as much as scheme, and Morris has already fit the profile of a coach who can help keep the 49ers defense steady while the rest of the staff and roster continue to evolve.

The long-term question is whether that arrangement lasts. Shanahan would like Morris to stay in place, and Morris has already acknowledged how rare head-coaching openings can be while sounding content in his current role, but that kind of success tends to travel quickly in the NFL. For now, it is only a possibility hanging over the partnership, yet it is the sort of future issue San Francisco may have to think about sooner than it would like. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Great Takes A Public Shot At Mike Evans' Game

Terrell Owens used his podcast to weigh in on Mike Evans game, and the Hall of Fame receiver did not frame the Buccaneers star as a burner who wins purely on athleticism. Owens made clear he respects what Evans has accomplished, pointing to a career built on production and consistency, including his run of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons.

What Owens and Todd Gurley were getting at was the way Evans has carved out his success in the league, with route nuance and the kind of quarterback support that keeps a receiver productive year after year. It was a familiar kind of ex-player debate, part praise and part critique, and one that put a spotlight on how Evans greatness is viewed by peers who understand the margins at that position. 49ers Suddenly Face A Christian McCaffrey Concern They Can't Ignore

Christian McCaffreys availability briefly turned into the biggest storyline of the afternoon against Atlanta, and not because of anything he did with the ball in his hands. The 49ers running back sustained a thigh injury during the game and was questionable to return after leaving for medical evaluation, a familiar kind of midgame worry for a team that leans heavily on his all-purpose impact.

Before he exited, McCaffrey was already doing his usual damage, helping the offense both on the ground and through the air. San Francisco had to adjust in the meantime, and Kaelon Black helped steady things with a 30-yard touchdown run while McCaffrey was out, but the bigger concern for the 49ers is whether their most versatile weapon can stay available long enough to keep the offense on schedule.
