The San Francisco 49ers are making strategic moves to bolster their roster in the highly competitive NFC West. With the Los Angeles Rams going all-in and the Seattle Seahawks coming off a Super Bowl win, the 49ers know they need to up their game, particularly on offense.
A key area of focus? The wide receiver corps.
The 49ers have already made waves by signing Mike Evans, a significant boost for their offensive lineup as they look ahead to the 2026 season. But they aren't stopping there.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the 49ers are set to add another weapon to their arsenal: free-agent wide receiver Christian Kirk. They're reportedly signing him to a one-year, $6 million deal. Kirk, who has previously played for the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals, is looking to bounce back after a challenging season.
Christian Kirk is no stranger to the league, entering his ninth season at 29 years old. He's had impressive moments, like his 2022 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he racked up 1,108 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 84 receptions.
However, last season was a tough one. Playing 13 games with the Texans, Kirk was targeted 52 times, securing 28 catches for 239 yards and a single touchdown.
His 8.5 yards per reception marked a career low, and he faced a dip in targets, catches, yards, and touchdowns for any season where he played at least 10 games.
Yet, 49ers fans shouldn't be too worried. Kirk showed flashes of his potential during the playoffs, catching 10 of 15 targets for 164 yards and two touchdowns over two games, despite the Texans' offensive struggles with C.J. Stroud.
Signing Kirk for $6 million is a savvy move for the 49ers. Alongside Ricky Pearsall and Mike Evans, the revamped wide receiver room is set to make an impact, even without Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk. As they gear up for 2026, the 49ers are positioning themselves as a team to watch.
