The 49ers are making moves to bolster their secondary by bringing in veteran cornerback Nate Hobbs on a one-year deal. This signing is a savvy move for San Francisco, as it won't affect their compensatory picks since Hobbs was released earlier this offseason.
Hobbs, who’s 26, is looking to bounce back after a challenging stint with Green Bay, where injuries and inconsistent play marred his performance. Now, with the fresh start in San Francisco, he has a chance to reset and make an impact.
Originally drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Hobbs inked a four-year rookie deal worth just under $3.8 million, including a modest signing bonus. After completing his rookie contract, he hit the open market and secured a lucrative four-year, $48 million contract with the Packers. However, Green Bay opted not to pay a $6.25 million roster bonus, effectively ending his time there.
In the 2025 season, Hobbs suited up for 11 games with the Packers, tallying 27 tackles, two tackles for loss, and defending two passes. Now with the 49ers, he has the opportunity to revive his career and contribute to a team with high aspirations. The 49ers are betting on his potential to rediscover the form that made him a sought-after free agent just a couple of years ago.
