Myles Garrett’s Rams debut came with all the buzz you’d expect from a June 1 blockbuster trade, but the stat sheet told a very different story in Melbourne.
The three-time reigning Sporting News Defensive Player of the Year didn’t record a sack, didn’t log a tackle and didn’t leave much of a mark as the Los Angeles Rams were beaten by the San Francisco 49ers, 27-7, in the 2026 NFL regular-season opener. Of the 16 Rams who were credited with a tackle, Garrett was not one of them.
The matchup turned into a rough first look for the star edge rusher, and the biggest reason was sitting across from him: Trent Williams.
At 6-foot-4 and 272 pounds, Garrett spent much of the afternoon trying to get around the 49ers’ 6-5, 320-pound left tackle, and Williams simply controlled the fight. Garrett couldn’t win with power, couldn’t get loose with his spin move, and couldn’t consistently find a clean path to Brock Purdy. Williams also had previous experience with Garrett from the 49ers’ 2023 game against Cleveland, when Garrett managed just one hit on Purdy.
This time, there wasn’t even that. Garrett never got to Purdy with a hit, and by the middle of the fourth quarter he was being taken off snaps after wearing down over the first three quarters. San Francisco made sure the edge threat never took over, and the 49ers’ growing lead in the second half only made that easier.
The game plan around Garrett was just as important as Williams’ work. San Francisco leaned on a quick short-to-intermediate passing attack and kept bodies involved in the run game, forcing the Rams’ 3-4 front to absorb too much traffic. Once the 49ers started wearing down that front with the run, Purdy had more room to attack downfield, which is where he thrives.
When Garrett lined up on the other side, the help was there too. Right tackle Colton McKivitz had tight end and fullback Kyle Juszczyk working alongside him, and Garrett never found a clear lane to the quarterback.
That doesn’t mean the Rams should panic over one quiet afternoon.
Garrett is only one piece of the team’s defensive overhaul. The other headline addition, Aaron Donald, was inactive for Week 1 as he continues working back after a three-plus-year layoff. Donald is expected to be activated for Week 2, when the Rams host the Giants on "Monday Night Football" on Sept. 21, 10 days later.
Once Donald is on the field in front of Garrett, the Rams should have a much harder-to-handle front with Kobie Turner inside and Byron Young outside as well. Garrett also won’t see Williams again until the 49ers host the Rams on Dec. 13 in Week 14.
The next few matchups should look friendlier. Against the Giants, Garrett will go up against Andrew Thomas. After that, it gets tougher again with Garrett Bolles and former 49er Mike McGlinchey.
Garrett came into this season after posting an NFL-record 23 sacks last year with the Browns, so one quiet debut doesn’t change the bigger picture. The 49ers have a rare mix of blocking, quarterback play, skill talent and play-calling. Against that kind of machine, even a pass rusher like Garrett can disappear for a day.
