The San Francisco 49ers are facing an intriguing offseason decision regarding quarterback Mac Jones. After stepping in admirably for Brock Purdy earlier in the season, Jones has emerged as a potential trade candidate.
However, the 49ers seem keen on keeping him around for the 2026 season. General Manager John Lynch emphasized the team's stance, stating that it would take a "fairly strong" offer to consider parting ways with Jones.
Lynch expressed the team's appreciation for Jones, highlighting his value to the roster. "He’s really good for us, and we value that," Lynch noted. "We’re a better team with him, and we just like having him around."
Reports from insiders like Dianna Russini and Adam Schefter reinforce the notion that the 49ers are not actively looking to trade Jones. Instead, they see him as a valuable backup for the upcoming season.
Jones himself seems content with the prospect of staying in San Francisco. Despite whispers of potential starting opportunities elsewhere, such as with the Vikings, Jones appreciates the chance to continue learning under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"I signed a two-year deal in San Francisco, so my whole goal was to get back on track and get with Kyle," Jones said. "If I have to do that again next year, I’ll be really excited."
Reflecting on his journey, Jones, a former first-round pick, expressed gratitude for the attention he’s receiving. Having been on his third team in five years, he’s learned the importance of finding the right fit.
"Being in the right offense with playmakers around you - that’s important," he remarked. "At the end of the day, I just want to keep playing good ball."
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has also voiced his expectation that Jones will remain with the team in 2026, reinforcing the quarterback's place in the 49ers' plans.
Jones, now 27, has had a notable career trajectory. He led Alabama to one of its most successful seasons in 2020, earning consensus All-American honors and the Davey O’Brien Award.
Drafted 15th overall by the Patriots in 2021, Jones signed a four-year deal with them before being traded to the Jaguars. After the Jaguars declined his fifth-year option, Jones found a new home with the 49ers in 2025.
Last season, Jones appeared in 11 games for San Francisco, starting eight. He demonstrated efficiency by completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
His performance has certainly made him a valuable asset, whether as a backup or potential starter. As the offseason unfolds, the 49ers will continue to weigh their options, but for now, Jones remains a key piece of their puzzle.
