The 49ers’ rookie spotlight shifted on Sunday, and it moved to the defensive side of the ball.
After Kaelon Black and De'Zhaun Stribling grabbed the attention in Week 1, San Francisco’s 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins brought a different set of first-year players to the front. Romello Height and Gracen Halton both started, and they were the headliners in a six-rookie package used by head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Height made the kind of debut that gets noticed fast. In his first start, he also picked up his first career sack, and it came at a huge moment.
With a little more than 10 and a half minutes left in the second quarter, on 3rd-and-10, he dropped Dolphins QB Malik Willis on the Niners’ own 10-yard line. The play was officially recorded as no loss, but it shut down the drive and forced Miami to settle for a field goal.
Height was later listed as questionable because of a hand injury, but he came back in the third quarter and finished the game.
Halton matched him in the starting lineup and turned in a strong afternoon of his own. He finished with five tackles and added a tackle for loss late in the fourth quarter. Together, Height and Halton accounted for six tackles, one sack, and a tackle for loss.
Black kept contributing on offense, too. He ran seven times for 25 yards, with a long gain of 6 yards and an average of 3.6 yards per carry. For a rookie in his second outing, it was another encouraging step and a sign he’ll stay on the radar as the season goes on.
Jaden Dugger and James Thompson Jr. also chipped in on defense. Neither started, but both recorded a solo tackle and an assisted tackle as reserves.
Dugger wasn’t as disruptive as he had been in Week 1, though the numbers still showed a solid day. Thompson was listed as questionable to return in the third quarter, and he left the field under his own power, but he did not come back.
Carver Willis also played in the game but did not record a statistic.
For San Francisco’s rookies, it was a strong first showing at Levi Stadium. With two wins already in hand, the group is getting real snaps early, and Height and Halton were the names that stood out this time. The early returns suggest this class could keep growing as the season moves along.

The 49ers opened at Levis Stadium with another convincing win, this time putting away the Dolphins 35-13 and moving to 2-0. Brock Purdy was efficient from start to finish, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns while posting a 149.1 passer rating, and the offense kept humming with help from George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey and a group that looked comfortable dictating the game on its own terms.
