49ers Rookie Suddenly Has A Big Chance To Change The Linebacker Plan

With Dre Greenlaw out, rookie Jaden Dugger has a chance to shine in the 49ers' lineup, potentially reshaping the team's future defense strategy.

Dre Greenlaw’s suspension is a setback for the San Francisco 49ers, but it also hands the team a clear look at what could be next. Rookie Jaden Dugger, who has been working as the starting SAM linebacker, is set to slide into a far more central job with Greenlaw unavailable.

That means Dugger is likely to make his first start at WILL in Week 6 and play most of the snaps. It’s a meaningful shift for a player whose usage has bounced around depending on game flow.

He was on the field for 55.7% of the snaps in the 49ers’ Week 1 blowout of the Los Angeles Rams, then dropped to 30.5% in Week 2 and 37.9% in Week 3. In the next game, he was down to just 15 snaps and 22.7% overall.

When Greenlaw has been out, though, Dugger has shown a different ceiling. He logged a career-high 47 snaps and 75% of the snaps in that game, which is a much bigger workload than the SAM spot typically offers.

San Francisco could have stayed with Dugger at SAM and turned to Garrett Wallow for more of the heavy lifting, which was the setup earlier in the year when Greenlaw went down. But Wallow is also expected to miss time because of an injury, clearing the path for the rookie to get a real shot as a full-time starter.

That opportunity fits the profile Dugger brought with him from Louisiana. As a former fifth-round pick, he was valued for his versatility, lining up on the edge, at linebacker and even at safety in college.

The 49ers have already leaned on that flexibility in a limited way. Now he gets a chance to narrow the focus and settle into one position.

Week 5 may have been the best game of Dugger’s NFL career, and he handled the new role well. His athleticism stands out, and the path forward is obvious if he keeps building on it. If he plays well enough to make a real difference and looks like the guy who can grow into next season’s job, the 49ers may not have much reason to go back to Greenlaw this offseason.

Brock Purdy Is Entering A 49ers Debate Fans Will Love

Brock Purdys steady start has the 49ers sitting in rare company, and it has also pulled his name into a familiar kind of national discussion. After another consistent stretch through the first five weeks of the season, Purdy has helped keep San Francisco undefeated, giving the offense the kind of stability that tends to change how outsiders talk about the quarterback at the center of it all.

Bill Simmons only added fuel to that conversation on a recent episode of The Ringer, offering high praise for Purdy and placing him in an unexpected lane when he talked about where the 49ers passer stacks up. With the Chiefs also unbeaten and Purdy continuing to look the part in his third season, the debate around how high his ceiling really goes is only going to get louder from here. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Receiver Injuries Just Forced A Decision They Wanted To Avoid

The 49ers receiver room has thinned fast enough that it has become a real roster question heading into Week 6 against Washington. With Deebo Samuel sidelined and the group already short on healthy bodies from the original roster, San Francisco is suddenly in a spot it wanted to avoid, one where depth matters as much as star power and every available option has to be weighed carefully.

That has naturally pushed the front office toward a familiar kind of midseason check-in: look at the market, see what is out there, and decide whether the need is urgent enough to act. Veterans such as Tyreek Hill have been mentioned among the possibilities, but the 49ers have been measured so far, suggesting they are trying to solve a receiver problem without overreacting to it. Jaxon Smith-Njigba Took The Seahawks Loss Hard For One Reason

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a rough ending to Seattles latest meeting with the 49ers, and it came in a game the Seahawks had little margin for error. The drop came late in the fourth quarter of a matchup San Francisco controlled enough to hand Seattle its second loss of the season, while the 49ers stayed unbeaten and kept building momentum in the division race.

Smith-Njigba did not try to hide from the miss afterward, acknowledging the mistake and saying he plans to be better when the next chance comes. For the Seahawks, the timing makes the recovery window tight, with Denver waiting on Thursday Night Football and another quick test for an offense trying to move on from a painful finish.
