San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Kaelon Black made his preseason debut last Thursday, and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak came away impressed by more than just the runs that showed up on film.
Black’s work in pass protection stood out early, enough that Brock Purdy brought it up to reporters. Kubiak called that part of the outing “just as impressive” and said, “He was on it from the second snap of the game. They brought a blitz, and he was on it, and he was stout.
Not surprising, though. He’s a sharp young man.
He’s in his playbook. He’s very coachable.
Bobby T[urner] got him on the right page. He’s just got to keep going, keep getting better.”
The rookie also flashed with the ball in his hands. Kubiak said Black gave the offense “kind of a spark,” pointing to a runner who didn’t need everything blocked perfectly to make something happen.
“I loved how he ran. He really brought kind of a spark to our offense.
He’s a guy who you don’t have to block it perfect every time. He’s going to muscle his way through for five, six yards, but he’s got good speed to burst and get some explosive runs.
I thought he did a really good job.
His first time in NFL action, the moment wasn’t big for him. He didn’t blink.
He was ready to go. Love his development.
Love where he’s at, but he needs to keep getting better, too, and stacking days. I think we’re going to have a good player on our hands down the road, but he’s got to keep pushing himself every day.”
Black’s impact didn’t come through a catch, but Kubiak said the 49ers still see him as a player they want to feature in the passing game. During OTAs and the early part of training camp, Black spent time as a wide receiver, and San Francisco tried to isolate him on linebackers with his speed.
Kubiak said the next step is building that part of Black’s game through more work with the quarterback and more responsibility in the route game.
“Yeah, we’re definitely trying to get him involved, definitely trying to get him some of those reps whether it’s choice routes, option routes, things out of the backfield that we ask our backs to do consistently. That’s a big part of his development, for sure, and getting the comfort and timing with the quarterback.
I thought he’s done a nice job here in these couple practices in that area. But again, it’s the same thing.
It’s just more reps, more growth, but he takes that jump and continues developing the pass game. We’re excited about him.”
Kubiak also said he was glad to have Jordan James back in the fold. He made clear he wasn’t overlooking the other backs who have been available, but added, “we drafted these guys for a reason.”

49ers May Have Found A Receiver Worth Watching For Brock Purdy
The 49ers wide receiver room has spent plenty of time lately dealing with injuries, so it makes sense that any long-range draft projection tied to that group will get some attention. In a 2027 NFL mock draft from Sports Illustrateds Gilberto Manzano, San Francisco was linked to Nick Marsh, the Indiana wideout who already has a reputation as a physical, agile target with the kind of upside that can make evaluators stop and take notice.
Marshs path has also added to the intrigue, with the former Michigan State receiver transferring to Indiana and showing the sort of traits that could make him a real problem for defenses down the line. For a 49ers team always thinking about how to keep Brock Purdy supplied with reliable options, it is the kind of name worth filing away, even if the real draft decision is still far off. Jed Yorks legal case in Ohio is now moving into a different kind of scrutiny, one that could matter well beyond the courtroom.
