49ers owner Jed York was sentenced to two days in jail and hit with a $1,150 fine after his weekend arrest in Ohio.
York, 46, a Youngstown native, was arrested Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio, on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. He entered no contest pleas Monday morning to two misdemeanors tied to the incident.
According to court records examined by WKBN, York received a two-day sentence in the Columbiana County jail and was credited for one day already served. The records also show the jail time will be served concurrently.
The case took a turn from the original arrest. A police report reviewed by KRON-4 said East Palestine Police detained York on suspicion of engaging in prostitution.
The State of Ohio later amended one count of engaging in prostitution to a disorderly conduct charge. York was also charged with one count of possessing criminal tools, and he pleaded no contest to both counts Monday.
Ohio law defines possession of criminal tools under Section 2923.24 of the State of Ohio's Revised Code as possession or control of dangerous ordnance, or materials for making it, when there’s no legitimate purpose; possession or control of a substance, device, instrument, or article designed or specially adapted for criminal use; or possession or control of something commonly used for criminal purposes when the circumstances show it was meant for criminal use. The offense is usually a misdemeanor, but it becomes a fifth degree felony if the item is used to help commit a felony.
Whether the NFL steps in is now the next question. York would presumably be subject to the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, which applies to owners as well as players. The source material notes that players rarely escape punishment for a personal conduct violation, but that the policy has not always landed as cleanly on ownership.
Robert Kraft is the example cited here. The Patriots owner was arrested and charged in 2019 with two misdemeanor counts of soliciting prostitution.
Florida prosecutors dropped those charges in 2020 after a state appeals court ruling kept them from using surveillance footage that reportedly showed Kraft receiving sexual services for money in a Jupiter, Fla. massage parlor. The league did not punish Kraft.
York’s no contest plea could still be enough to lead to a ban, a fine, or both from the league office.
