49ers Must Clean Up One Costly Issue To Stay Unbeaten Monday Night

The San Francisco 49ers look to maintain their perfect season start and set a new Monday Night Football record by exploiting key weaknesses in the Washington Commanders' game.

The 49ers get their first primetime test of the 2026 season on Monday night, and the stakes stretch beyond a clean 6-0 start. San Francisco can also break a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers and claim the most Monday Night Football wins in NFL history with a 56th victory.

At 5-0, the 49ers welcome the 1-3-1 Washington Commanders to Levi’s Stadium, and the matchup brings a different kind of challenge than the standings suggest. Dan Quinn’s team has enough dual-threat juice to make things uncomfortable if San Francisco lets the game get loose. Kyle Shanahan’s crew has a clear path, though, and it starts with four demands.

The first is simple: keep Jayden Daniels hemmed in. Daniels came back last week and put up 302 yards against the New York Giants, piling on 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Washington’s run game is far more dangerous when it gets to the edge, where the Commanders are averaging 5.7 yards per carry, compared with 3.9 yards per carry between the tackles. With Nick Bosa dealing with a calf injury and Dre Greenlaw suspended, the burden falls on San Francisco’s edge defenders, including Keion White and Ogbo Okoronkwo, to rush smart and stay disciplined.

Let Daniels escape structure, and Washington can turn broken plays into big ones in a hurry.

San Francisco also has a major opening against a defense that has cracked late. Washington ranks last in second-half defense, and through five games it has already given up a league-high 95 points after halftime.

That includes 20 unanswered second-half points allowed against Indianapolis and two late scoring drives of more than 70 yards against the Giants. The 49ers have been the NFL’s best second-half finishing team, averaging 17.8 points in the third and fourth quarters combined.

That puts the pressure on Shanahan to strike early through the air, then let Christian McCaffrey and a physical “bully ball” approach grind Washington down as the game moves into the later stages.

Third down could decide whether this turns into a comfortable night or a messy one. San Francisco enters Week 6 leading the NFL in third-down conversion rate, while Washington’s offense sits 29th in that category.

On the other side, the Commanders are allowing opponents to convert 43.3% of third downs, which ranks 24th. Brock Purdy has been sharp in keeping the offense ahead of schedule, completing 98 of 142 passes for 1,196 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Even with Deebo Samuel sidelined and Mike Evans dealing with rib and Achilles soreness, the 49ers can keep the chains moving by leaning on George Kittle and, potentially, Christian Kirk on intermediate routes.

And then there’s the turnover game, where Washington has been dangerous despite the record. The Commanders are plus-5 in turnover margin, tied for second-best in the league, and they’ve leaned on takeaways to keep games close while masking some defensive holes.

San Francisco coughed the ball up four times in Seattle last week and still survived because the defense answered with takeaways of its own. Against a Commanders team looking for a signature win, Purdy and the backs have to be clean with the football or they’ll hand Daniels short fields and a chance to swing the night.

Shanahan Just Made Monday Night About More Than Beating Washington

Kyle Shanahans relationship with Dan Quinn goes back to their Atlanta days, when Shanahan served as offensive coordinator under Quinn in 2015 and 2016. As the 49ers prepare to visit Washington on Monday night, Shanahan said the biggest lessons from that stretch went beyond the playbook, with Quinn putting real weight on how a team talks to one another and builds its identity.

That perspective adds another layer to a matchup that already looks lopsided on paper, with San Francisco leading the NFL in point differential and Washington sitting at 1-3-1. It is also a reunion with a coach Shanahan knows well, only now Quinn is guiding the Commanders, which gives this one a little more history than your average cross-country trip. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Get An Early Edge As Commanders Backfield Suddenly Thins

The 49ers got an early break in the lead-up to their meeting with Washington, as the Commanders backfield took a hit before the matchup even arrived. Jacory Croskey-Merritt, the rookie who has given Washington a useful spark this season with 239 rushing yards and two touchdowns, has been ruled out because of a groin injury, trimming one of the more intriguing pieces of the Commanders run game.

Washington still has options, of course, with Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler expected to carry more of the load. The bigger question now is how the Commanders fill out the rest of that group for game day, and whether the added uncertainty forces them to shuffle more than they would like before facing a 49ers defense that will already be focused on controlling the line of scrimmage. Renardo Green Is Giving The 49ers Defense Something It Needed

Renardo Green has become one of the more encouraging developments for the 49ers defense this season, giving San Francisco a young corner who is starting to look much more comfortable in Raheem Morris system. His growth has shown up in the numbers, too, with Green standing out among the teams cornerbacks in passes defended and ball hawk rate, a sign that he is not just hanging around plays but consistently finding ways to affect them.

The progress has not come out of nowhere, either. Kyle Shanahan pointed to the work Green did before the offseason program even got rolling as a major reason for the jump, and it is the kind of behind-the-scenes preparation that tends to show up once the games start counting. For a defense that always values playmaking on the back end, Green is starting to provide exactly the sort of presence that can change the way opponents test San Francisco. [Read more 🡒]
