Marques Sigle entered his rookie year as one of the brighter surprises from the San Francisco 49ers’ 2025 NFL Draft class, a fifth-round pick who looked ready to carve out a real role right away. For the first seven weeks, he did exactly that, starting and giving the team reason to believe it had found something.
That momentum didn’t last. Once Malik Mustapha returned from injury, Sigle lost his first-team spot and spent the rest of the season working as a backup and on special teams.
Even as the 49ers cycled through uneven play at safety from Mustapha, now-New York Giants defensive back Jason Pinnock and Ji’Ayir Brown, Sigle never got another crack at the lineup. That absence said plenty.
The setup is different now. San Francisco has Raheem Morris in as its new defensive coordinator, and with Morris’ background as a defensive backs specialist, Sigle suddenly looks like one of the most interesting variables in the room. If Morris sees a player he can develop, Sigle could become the swing piece in a safety group that still feels shaky behind the scenes.
There’s talent there, but also plenty to clean up. Sigle built an early reputation as a hard-hitting defensive back who played with edge, though not always with enough discipline. In coverage, opposing quarterbacks posted a near-perfect 149.6 passer rating against him and completed three touchdowns.
That’s the tradeoff with a young defensive back: the collision pops, but the mistakes can hurt. If Morris can help Sigle slow the game down mentally without taking away the aggression that makes him stand out, the second-year player could force his way back into the conversation for a starting job. In that scenario, he could push Brown or Mustapha into reserve roles and even squeeze out players such as Ashtyn Davis or Jalen Stroman.
Of course, the other path is just as real. Young defensive backs often need time, and Sigle may simply be one of those players who needs a year or two before everything clicks.
If the jump from Year 1 to Year 2 comes, Morris could be the coach who helps unlock it. If it doesn’t, Sigle could fade back into the background and settle deep on the depth chart.
