49ers May Already Have A Problem With Raheem Morris

The San Francisco 49ers must confront the possibility of losing their newly appointed defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris, whose performance could quickly lead to head coaching opportunities.

The 49ers found a rare offseason win when they brought in Raheem Morris to run the defense, but that move comes with a familiar catch: success tends to make coordinators hard to keep.

San Francisco was in a tricky spot after Robert Saleh left for a head coaching job, forcing the team to search for a new defensive coordinator for the fourth straight year. That kind of turnover can wipe out momentum fast, so the 49ers had to land this hire. Instead, they landed a big one.

Morris has stepped in and delivered exactly what the 49ers hoped for, and then some. The defense has been sharp, clean, and difficult to pick apart. In that sense, Morris has been even better than Saleh.

That’s the good news. The uncomfortable part is what usually follows when a coordinator does his job too well.

Morris could be a short-term answer if another head coaching opportunity opens up after the 2026 season. That would be a rough outcome for San Francisco, which obviously would prefer to keep him around far longer.

“I see Raheem here for as long as I'm here," Kyle Shanahan said. "And if I wasn't, I'm sure they wouldn't be getting rid of him either.

Raheem's so good of a coach, you’ve always got to be nervous you'll lose him as a head coach. But, if that doesn't happen I don't plan on him ever leaving.

So, got to make sure that happens.”

Shanahan’s view makes sense. The two are close, and the 49ers coach clearly sees Morris as one of the league’s top defensive minds. From San Francisco’s perspective, there’s every reason to want that partnership to last.

But the final call doesn’t belong to the 49ers. It belongs to Morris, and he doesn’t sound eager to chase the head coach label just for the sake of it.

"We have got this illusion in our head that everybody's a head coach," Morris said. "Guys, there are 32 head coaches in the National Football League.

There's 32 defensive coordinators and there are 32 offensive coordinators and there's 32 everything we do. There's 32 media members that do what you do.

We are blessed and you couldn't have a better job than all of us.”

So for now, the 49ers can enjoy the way their defense is playing under Morris. But the bigger question is waiting at the end of the season: will he stay, or will another team eventually try to pull him away?

If he does remain, San Francisco will take it as a victory. It just won’t change the reality that this situation may need to be solved all over again soon.

49ers May Have Found A Possible McCaffrey Successor To Watch

Makhi Hughes is the kind of running back the 49ers have to keep on the radar as they think beyond Christian McCaffrey. Now at Houston after stops at Oregon and Tulane, Hughes has the build and style that tend to fit San Franciscos offense, with a strong frame, good contact balance and the kind of one-cut burst that can translate well in Kyle Shanahans system.

The 2026 season has only sharpened the case for him as a future draft name worth tracking, especially if the 49ers are looking for a possible late-round answer at the position in 2027. Hughes path has already included a move away from Oregon, and his current production has put him back into the kind of conversation that keeps scouts watching closely as the next class starts to take shape. Shanahans Patience With Two Shaky 49ers Is Getting Tested

The 49ers have spent the first six games leaning on depth, and for the most part it has paid off in a 6-0 start. But not every spot has been as steady as the record suggests. Wide receiver Jacob Cowings punt return work has become a concern over the past two games, and kicker Eddy Pineiro has also had some uneven moments, turning what should be routine special-teams plays into a little more stress than San Francisco would like.

Kyle Shanahan did not dismiss either issue, but he also did not sound like a coach ready to make a panic move. He said both players can improve, which leaves the 49ers in a familiar spot for a team that has high standards across the roster: good enough to keep winning, but still watching a couple of shaky edges that could matter if they dont tighten up soon. Raheem Morris Gives 49ers Falcons Matchup Extra Intrigue

Raheem Morriss trip back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium adds a little extra texture to a 49ers-Falcons matchup that already carries some familiar NFL weight. Now San Franciscos defensive coordinator, Morris spent time as Atlantas head coach and is back in the building for the first time since the Falcons moved on from him in January, giving this game a personal layer even before the opening kickoff.

Morris had praise for Michael Penix Jr. and Bijan Robinson, a nod to the kind of talent the Falcons can put on the field and the challenge that comes with facing them. Still, Kyle Shanahan and Fred Warner have made clear the 49ers do not lean on emotional hooks to get themselves ready, treating this one like any other week even if Morriss return gives the matchup a little more to discuss.
