49ers May Already Have A Deadline Piece In Their Secondary

Despite struggling to find his place in San Francisco's defense, Jack Jones emerges as a surprising trade prospect as the 49ers eye roster upgrades before the deadline.

The 49ers are expected to be active at the trade deadline, and Jack Jones looks like one of the more surprising names who could be moved. He could be dealt on his own, or San Francisco could use him as part of a package to land a more valuable player.

Jones signed a one-year, $1.2M deal with the 49ers this offseason, which makes him an easy contract to move. But the bigger issue is that he hasn’t started or played well in San Francisco. That said, he does bring a track record of starting experience, with 16 starts for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 and 17 starts for the Miami Dolphins in 2025.

If another team wants a low-cost starter, the price to get Jones from the 49ers probably won’t be steep. The fit hasn’t worked, and San Francisco may simply decide to cut bait.

The 49ers have tried to use Jones in dime packages, bringing him on when they need an extra defensive back. In those looks, Deommodore Lenoir moves into the slot alongside Upton Stout, while Jones and Renardo Green handle the outside.

His usage has already started to shrink. Jones played only eight snaps in Week 1, then saw that jump to 10 the next week, when he gave up 88 yards.

The following game, he was on the field for 28 snaps and allowed 53 yards. After surrendering 18 yards on 15 snaps in Week 4, San Francisco began reducing his role.

That continued against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5, when Jones played just three snaps. He logged seven snaps against the Washington Commanders in Week 7, but that came only after the team tried Ashtyn Davis.

San Francisco first pulled Upton Stout and moved Davis into the slot, with Lenoir staying outside. Davis struggled, and Jones then came on for seven snaps on the final drive when the 49ers needed more defensive backs. Outside of that moment, the team seems to be trying to phase him out.

There are other options on the roster as well. Fourth-round rookie Ephesians Prysock has not played this season, but he could get a chance on the outside if the 49ers want to shift Lenoir inside. Nate Hobbs is also on the IR and still has a chance to return this season.

The bigger picture may point elsewhere, though. San Francisco could need more help in the front seven than at corner, and moving Jones to help fill another need makes sense. Either way, his role looks limited from here.

Brock Purdy Made An Admission 49ers Fans Will Appreciate

Brock Purdy has spent the early part of the season giving 49ers fans plenty to feel good about, steering San Francisco to a 6-0 start while stacking up 1,460 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. The second-year quarterback has also become a familiar face away from the field, picking up a lucrative Toyota endorsement in 2024 along with deals from Adidas, Alaska Airlines, Applebees and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Still, the growing profile has not exactly made him comfortable with the spotlight. Purdy said the commercial side of stardom still feels a little strange, even if he appreciates the support from family and friends watching him break through. For a quarterback already carrying the attention that comes with the 49ers unbeaten start, it is a reminder that the off-field adjustment can be its own kind of test. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Injuries Just Created A Huge Chance For Jordan Watkins

Achilles tendinitis has already started reshaping the 49ers receiver picture, and the timing could hardly be better for Jordan Watkins. With Mike Evans out of the lineup against Washington, San Francisco had to lean on its depth, and the second-year wideout suddenly found himself in line for a larger role as the offense looks for answers on the perimeter.

Watkins has yet to carve out much of a rsum, but opportunity is opportunity in this league, especially for a team trying to stay afloat through injuries. If he can turn extra snaps into real production, he could make this stretch matter beyond a temporary fill-in role, though the 49ers may keep looking for other help if the passing game stalls and healthier receivers start returning. 49ers May Have One Edge In A Tough Michael Penix Matchup

Raheem Morris should give the 49ers a valuable extra lens as they prepare for Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons, simply because he knows the quarterback so well from his time as Atlantas head coach. Morris was part of the evaluation process that helped shape Penixs arrival in Atlanta, and he has remained a useful source on how the quarterback has developed since getting back to full health.

For San Francisco, that kind of background matters in a matchup that already looks tricky. Morris has followed Penix closely enough to understand what the Falcons believe they have in him, from his talent to the recent strides he has made since returning to the field. Whether that translates into a real edge on game day is another question, but it gives the 49ers a clearer view of the challenge in front of them. [Read more 🡒]
