49ers Lose Dre Greenlaw At A Brutal Time For This Defense

The San Francisco 49ers will have to face the Washington Commanders without linebacker Dre Greenlaw after his suspension appeal was denied, leaving a crucial vacancy in their defense.

The 49ers’ defense is going to have to keep moving without one of its key voices in the middle. Dre Greenlaw’s appeal of his one-game suspension was denied Tuesday, meaning he’ll miss Monday Night Football against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 19 at Levi’s Stadium.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the decision, and hearing officer James Thrash - jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFL Players Association - upheld the ban. Greenlaw was already facing discipline after the sequence that turned San Francisco’s 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks into one of the ugliest moments of the weekend.

It happened late in the first half at Lumen Field. With 6:23 left in the second quarter and the 49ers leading 14-10, Greenlaw was penalized for a late hit on Sam Darnold after the quarterback scrambled toward the Seattle sideline.

Things escalated immediately after, with several Seahawks confronting Greenlaw. He then headbutted linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet and was left bleeding.

Greenlaw was ejected on the spot.

The NFL announced the suspension Monday and cited Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which covers acts “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” Greenlaw will not be paid for the game he misses.

This wasn’t Greenlaw’s first run-in with the league. He was suspended one game in 2025 while with the Denver Broncos after aggressively pursuing an official following a game-winning field goal. Sunday’s ejection was also at least the third of his career.

San Francisco brought Greenlaw back in March on a one-year, $7.5 million deal after Denver let him go following one season. He played only eight games for the Broncos in 2025.

Now the 49ers have to replace production and presence in the middle of the field. Through five games, Greenlaw has piled up 37 tackles and forced a fumble.

Even with him gone for most of Sunday’s game, the 49ers kept their perfect record intact. Brock Purdy drove two late scoring possessions, Eddy Pineiro knocked through a 43-yard field goal with 1:56 left to put San Francisco ahead, and Malik Mustapha stopped Cooper Kupp a yard short on fourth down to finish it.

The 49ers are 5-0, and Greenlaw will be eligible to return for Week 7.

49ers Face A New Monday Night Problem Against Washington

Monday night brings a fresh test for San Francisco, and it comes with a familiar kind of pressure: a division race feel, a national audience and a roster that has to adjust on the fly. The 49ers enter Week 6 dealing with the absence of key defender Deebo Samuel, who was injured against the Seahawks, while Washington arrives carrying its own uneven moments, including a costly mental mistake from Carson Wentz. For San Francisco, the matchup is less about the spotlight and more about staying composed against a team that can still make games uncomfortable if you let it.

The Commanders have enough speed and perimeter talent to force the issue if the 49ers lose discipline, and the game plan on both sides should reflect that tension. San Francisco will want to lean on its structure and its run defense, while Washington will try to find answers against a defense that can make the middle of the field difficult. With the 49ers also trying to maximize Mike Evans and keep the offense on schedule, this one has the feel of a matchup where one or two explosive plays could decide whether it stays routine or turns into a problem. 49ers Just Tightened Their Grip On The NFC West

The 49ers left Week 5 with a firmer hold on the NFC West after knocking off the Seahawks, a result that gave San Francisco some breathing room at the top of a division that still has familiar challengers lurking behind it. Seattle and the Rams are still in the race, but both are going to need to keep stacking wins to avoid watching the gap widen any further.

For the 49ers, the bigger picture is as important as the result itself. They managed to score 32 points without piling up 300 total yards, and four Seattle turnovers helped swing the game in their favor. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have dropped four straight and already look more like a team thinking ahead than one focused on this seasons chase. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Fans Can't Ignore What's Brewing In The NFC West

The NFC West has settled into an early hierarchy, with San Francisco out front at 5-0 and Seattle right behind while the Rams sit in third at 2-3. For 49ers fans, that cushion looks comfortable for now, but the division has a way of tightening quickly once the schedule starts to tilt in one teams favor.

Los Angeles is staring at a stretch that could help it climb back into the race, and Seattle is about to find out how much staying power it really has against tougher opponents. If the Rams take advantage of their softer slate, the 49ers' lead could look a lot less secure by the time the division hits its next checkpoint. [Read more 🡒]
